AIM 60 Gunbag & Mat

There’s no disputing the fact the AIM 60 Tactical Drag Bag has been designed along the lines of the military, sniper bags that are often very expensive pieces of kit. Though following the tactical trend, it doesn’t follow the price and appears to be a good alternative to the more expensive brands currently available.

The bag is made from 1000 denier cordura nylon with extra thick closed cell foam padding with all handles being box stitched for extra strength. This one is in tan, but is also available in green, camo (DPM) and black and, as the name suggests, it’s a full 60” long, meaning it will accommodate just about any rifle, even with longer barrels and/or moderators fitted, up to an overall length of 59”.

External measurements are 60 x 11.5 x 3” and before stepping inside just check out the external stowage options. There are two large pouches set along one side measuring 24 x 10 x 3” and 10.5 x 14 .5 x 2”. The smaller one has an outer pocket accessed by a diagonal zipper. Handy for documents and roomy enough for kit such as waterproofs, binoculars and ammo. In the larger pocket you could probably squeeze in the kitchen sink! Both pockets unzip around three sides to hinge open for greater ease of access and inside both have additional storage spaces/slots.

Heavy Duty

The main closure is by a heavy-duty zip with an easy-pull cord toggle, which opens the case out flat so it can act as a makeshift-shooting mat. The zip is further protected by an over-flap, which uses adjustable traps with QD buckles as opposed to the more common press studs. On the nose is a detachable muzzle protector sleeve with a drag handle, there’s also another webbing drag handle on the opposite side to the pockets.

On the opposite side to the pouches you’ll notice a zipped panel, inside is a pair of detachable/adjustable padded shoulder straps with chest strap. These can be clipped on and the whole load back packed, which for a heavy tactical/varmint-type gun is often the easiest way of transport. Normally carry is accomplished by wrap-around handles at the point of balance.

For security of the contents there’s a butt support and three adjustable QD straps, so the rifle won’t budge an inch. There’s also an internal sleeve in the spine specifically to accommodate a cleaning rod. Overall this is an impressive item of gun luggage.

Simpler but no less useful is the AIM Range Shooting Mat, but don’t think it’s just for the target line, as when ambush shooting a mat is also a useful field accessory. With its rubberised underside its 100% waterproof and measures 70 x 35”. Features include webbing loops for securing it to the ground. At the front end are two clear pockets that can be used for score cards, ballistic data, or in the case of a hunter, a range card. When not needed it folds, concertina-style into its own 24 x 20 x 5” nylon carry case with adjustable shoulder strap. Like the drag bag it’s available in green, camo and tan.

Conclusions

If you have an extra special rifle, especially one that’s quite long, this is certainly the bag for you. The company also produce the shorter AIM 50, which accepts rifles of up to 49” long.
The Range Shooting Mat is a handy piece of kit, though perhaps a little expensive for what it is. The quality and construction of the AIM 60 is impressive, as is the practicality of the design, also the price is most competitive.

These days with a fully tricked up airgun or custom rifle combo costing in excess of £1000, you owe it to yourself to keep it properly protected and there’s no doubt the new Drag Bag will do just that.
