Ase Utra NS-3S North Star moderator
Finland seems to be at the cutting edge of technology when it comes to the manufacturer and design of firearm’s moderators, with Ase Utra (AU) being amongst the top names. In the UK they stand out as one of the few companies who only offer muzzle-mounted cans with their Jet-Z, Compact and CQB and S Series models. Being a confirmed reflex (over barrel or telescopic) kinda’ guy I never thought much about the AU designs, until a few years ago; when I was turned onto them by my good friend John Rippin. Truth is they are very efficient in what they do and, though obviously hanging off the end of the rifle, are not that large.
I now use them for a number of my rifles and apart from their ability I like the fact they are exceptionally well built with what looks like thick steel plate. When compared to the far thinner, pressed sheet steel of the BR Tuote or softer alloy of other makes they strikes me as near bomb proof…
About two years ago AU introduced the S Series, all-stainless and as ever muzzle-mounted; the S5 was wider and shorter in build and has proven to be another good design. Plus the added advantages of stainless construction makes it just that bit more corrosion resistant when compared to the carbon steel of the Jet-Z series.
A change in direction
So I was surprised when Peter Jackson (Jackson Rifles) who imports Ase Utra, BR Tuote and SAK moderators mentioned that AU would be making a reflex. Now a North Star (NS) NS-3S model is sitting on my desk and I have to say after testing it on a 308 Tikka T3 that I am more than a little impressed.
OK you could simply write the NS off as another reflex design, but when compared to a comparable BR Tuote T8, which is a great can and very much the yardstick over here, you find that the NS is shorter, slimmer and weighs about the same, due in the main to its noticeably heavier, all-stainless steel build.
Peter could not supply me with a schematic of the design, but it uses the same style of baffle stack as the S Series in the front end integrated with an over-barrel expansion chamber at the rear. However, closer inspection shows a bit of the old Jet-Z design about the NS, as all these models have a short/primary expansion chamber in front of the baffle stack and so does the NS-3S, which connects to the main one at the rear.
Also different is the lack of a rear polymer bushing that all other reflex type’s offer. On a T8 this screws into the back of the expansion chamber and is bored out to suit the outside diameter (O/D) of the barrel. I found no instability problems at all, but it does seem odd not to have this rear support, which will in theory offer a deal more stability… Conversely you could argue that the can will set up naturally and not be pushed off centre by a badly fitted bushing. The inside diameter of this section is 0.980”, which needs to be born I mind if you are considering a really heavy barrel. The T3 Tactical’s O/D was 0.873”, which is near maximum.
Two versions
The NS series is offered in two models - calibres up to .25-06 Rem (NS3.25) and NS3.30 up to and including 30-06 Springfield. Sound suppression values are from 24 to 28 db (c) with a recommended maintenance period of 5000-rounds and a two year/10,000-round guarantee. To be honest as long as you give it a squirt of spray oil after use it will probably go on for ever; especially as it’s all-stainless and of a slightly heavier build than a T8. I had a T8 Scout and that was still going strong after five years when I sold the rifle with it on… Simply because it kept the rust at bay!
By comparison I also measured up the following moddies just to see the differences:
Model Weight Dimensions dB rating Over muzzle Price
NS-3S 1lb 6oz 1.82 x 7.76” 24 – 28 4” £231
S5 1lb 4oz 1.8 X 5.130” 25 – 28 4.5” £255
Jet-Z Compact 1lb 2oz 1.52 x 7.77” 26 – 32 6” £293
T8 .30 cal 1lb 6oz 1.96 x 10.11” 25 – 30 4” £205
As can be seen the NS3 is as heavy as the full T8 but shorter and slimmer. Peter Jackson had this to say about the efficiency of the North Star design: “In our tests the .25 and .30 calibre T8 moderators performed 0 to 2 dB better than the NS3s. Repeatability of such tests is typically +/- 1 or 2 dB and results from Finland, using different rifles, moderators and ammo were the other way around. The bottom line is that, calibre for calibre, there is no significant difference in performance between the T8 and NS3 and both moderators are comfortably below the EU limit of 137 dB(C) at the shooter’s ear (typically 7 dB less than readings taken 1 m to the left of the muzzle).”
Mk 1 ear
On the range with the Tikka and a comparison 308 with a T8 up front proved to be the case to my Mk 1 ear, as the thump of this calibre was seriously reduced to near identical and non painful levels. Hardly scientific but that’s where we will be using moderated rifles and if they work as such then I have no complaints.
What did appeal was the more compact dimensions over the T8 and also less barrel over hang than my AU Compact. Yes it is noticeably heavier, but this weight is distributed back into the rifle. Add to this the all-stainless build and the fact it will probably last longer than you own the rifle it’s on for and you have yet another good option to consider. As for me I will be getting one for my 6.5 Grendel, as I rather like the look of the thing and it will also give me a chance to test it on a long term basis.
Overall a good first effort for Ase Utra, that now gives them a cost effective and high quality model that can more than compete with the other reflex designs out there.
We Reckon:
• Where’s the rear bushing?
• Good build quality and ability
• Excellent first reflex design

I just bought one of these last week and I think they are brill. I have it on my .308 with an 18" barrel and it's noticably quiter than my S5 on my .30-06 with a 24" barrel. Granted the .30-06 has a bit more powder, but the short barel on my .308 is pretty noisy without the Northstar. It's nice and compact compared to the T8, and feels nice and solid. Good job Ase :thumbs up: well impressed.

Help ! I have just bought aTikka t3 lite 6.5, 19" stainless barrel ,threaded 18x1, with synthetic stock. What moderator shall I buy ? The review's are good in so much as they are interesting reading on sound levels ect or price diference, but what about suitability for my choice of light weight rifle. Should I choose, over -barrel,muzzle mounted , what would you suggest are my choices. "be polite, please." !

North Star - well built, all-stainless, so will last well, with a workable outboard length, though might make a light rifle feel a bit imbalanced
Ase Utra Compact - all steel (heavy gauge) so strong and tough but muzzle mounted so adding more length, however on a 19" tube not a hassle
BR Tuote T8 - classic reflex design, all steel (light gauge) so needs regular TLC or it will rust out
A-TEC - alloy relex design, offers the longest outboard length and can suffer from gas cutting on the baffles
A-TEC CMM - muzzle mounted in either alloy or steel, light but the alloy unit suffers from gas cutting
J-TEC Ranger - copy of A-TEC reflex, works as well, slightly heavier with usual considerations on outboard length and gas cutting
Wildcat Predator 8 - all alloy, heavy build reflex with interchangbale baffle stacks and expansion chambers. Here you can by buying extra components mix-n-match as to rifle & calibre
Lawrence Precision Aurora all-titanium - slim reflex design, ligthweight at 14 oz and near indestructable, however very expensive at £599
Hope that helps and no rude comments either...

Brilliant info Pete,I have decided that the weight is my priority along with a reasonable price so have asked my dealer to order an A-TEC from Jackson Rifles, who incidently informed me that the thread size on my tube could not be 18x1 as its dia is to small it would be 14x1 ! He was of the opinion that maybe the instruction booklet stating this information was for a heavey barrelled rifle.
When I recieve the moderator and its all ready for the field I will let you know how I get on.
Ian.

I'm looking to get a northstar for my 6.5x55, i guess i would need the larger of the two, the .30 cal mod NS3.30 as the 6.5 is a fraction larger than the 25-06, is that correct? many thanks
Comment by: Dom Posted on: 04 Dec 2009 at 11:46 PM
I have the .25 North Star on my 6.5 Grendel and that works OK. However, you are correct the 6.5 is actually .264" so larger than .257". Give Jackson Rifles a bell and they will point you in the right direction...

I've just perchased a Tika T3 light in 223, the guy in the shop recomended a Wildcat mod.
Having read the spec on the mod is says up to 308 cal, is it normal to fit a 308 mod on a 223 rifle or should it be the same calibre as the gun ?

I forgot to mention it's a Predator 8 mod. Thanks for sharing the reviews, they can be a bit confusing with all the dB stuff but I'm getting the hang of it ( I think)
Many thanks
Andy

Just bought te new S5, can anyone tell me how to stop them from loosening off.
Comment by: David Mair Posted on: 30 Jul 2011 at 08:55 PM
This very much depends on the actual thread diameter cut on the muzzle. I find most moddies tend to tighten up a little with use as firing resiude gets in the threads. I'm just testing a new S5 on a 204 Ruger and that was slacking off after a few shots, but seemed to stop it after about 20. But you must realise that there's no locking system and hand tight is just that, so vibrations will cause it to slacken a bit. You could try a little drop of light thread locking compound, but it's never a good thing to leave the moddy on the rifle as it will allow moisture to build-up and could cause corrosion.
I have now got into the habit of just giving the moddy a quick twist to ensure it's on and for most hunting/varmint situations it seems to suffice.

I have one of these, in .30 cal m14x1 thread, had it on my 223 x bolt, fab moddy. Now sold rifle and got another in a different thread, but according to my gunsmith, if I send it to Jackson rifles, they will change the thread. Bonus
