Browning Clothing

Last year Browning sent me a selection of their new range of clothing. Designed by shooters for shooters and to cater for any time of year, it wasn’t long before I realized the ability of this comprehensive range.

XPO Big Game Insulated Parka, Pants and Grand Passage Gloves - £198, £105 and £34

Designed for any form of static hunting such as high seat work, the parka and matching trousers are exceptional designs. Worn throughout the recent cold weather, the Mossy Oak Break Up camo jacket shows a hi-tech build that includes Browning’s Pre–Vent material that’s 100% waterproof, windproof and fully breathable. Complete with an adjustable and detachable hood, lots of pockets, hand warmers slots and ammunition loops this is one serious design that will not be found wanting.

The pants are lined and also use Pre-Vent and show a high waist with kidney protector, plus side and leg pockets. Knee-length, gusseted cuff allows the wearer to tighten them around high boots and facilitate easy removal.

Browning claim their XPO Grand Passage Gloves will keep your hands warm and dry no matter what the circumstances whilst providing full articulation and grip and it’s true. Lined in soft fleece with Pre-Vent, the flexible knuckles, insulated palms and Lycra cuffs proved their worth down to -15º with no hint of cold, wind or water penetration.

Worn together during the early year’s freeze, no other outfit came even close to matching these three garments. Even after five uninterrupted hour’s exposure the suit was still doing its job. Overall superb and practical cold weather clothing.

Editor (Pete Moore) tested the Grand Passage suit in Mossy Oak Duck blind pattern in the April 2010 issue if you want to get the full technical appraisal.

Ride Check Shirt & Badger Creek Short – Sleeved Shirt - £35

The Ride Check 100% cotton shirt is warm, luxurious and comfortable. A button down collar and generous breast pocket add to the look as do the adjustable cuffs. Likewise, the Badger Creek shooting shirt that comes short sleeved only. Once again a 100% light cotton, it’s plenty long enough to tuck well into trousers, the shooting shoulder is quilted with an internal pocket to add a gel insert should it be required. Vented with mesh across the shoulders with an unstructured collar, when worn with a skeet apron, the Badger Creek was all I needed for my summer time clay breaking.

Clay Shooting Fleece Jacket - £118

story continues below...

Made from Pre-Vent which makes it both soft, warm, wind and waterproof, this lightly padded jacket is based around a proper skeet vest. With sleeves, large double bellows cartridge pockets, twin shoulder patches, a short wool collar and adjustable Lycra cuffs. The modern fabrics keep it thin enough to allow full, unimpeded movement whilst ensuring your stock dimensions don’t alter. Only available in a mid-tan with brown trim and discreet Browning logos, this is without doubt the best, most comfortable shooting fleece I’ve yet worn.

Winter Fleece & Velvet Caps - £13-20 each

If you need a buy a baseball cap you might as well make it a good one. Browning’s Winter Fleece cap is just that! In reflective orange it’s 100% waterproof, keeps it shape and the lining keeps your head toasty warm. A pair of fold-down ear flaps do an excellent job of keeping your lugholes warm too.

Alternatively, there’s Browning’s new line of velvet caps. Made from lustrous corduroy with a brass buckle fastener, they add a touch of comfortable class even if you don’t shoot. Both caps have served well over the last year and still look like new.

Grand Passage Camo Bag - £57-20

Manufactured from 900 – Denier polyester with a reinforced liner, the Grand Passage Camo Bag comes in Mossy Oak Duck Blind camo. Complete with a molded foam base, webbed carry handles and a detachable shoulder strap, Browning have even gone as far as to ensure the bag will float. Large enough to hold a full weekend’s kit in the main compartment, numerous additional zipped inner and outer pockets come with ammo loops and hooks whilst both side pockets have been designed to hold a full box of 12 – bore ammo. Useful and versatile, I’ve been using the bag for all sorts of carry chores and as an all-round grip it’s hard to beat.

Camo T – Shirt - £19-40 & Camo Umbrella - £20

Jersey cotton rich, comfortable, a good length and complete with a breast pocket with an embroidered Buckmark. The new Browning, Camo-T comes in Mossy Oak photorealistic camouflage and looks the part whatever the circumstances. Cool in summer or as an extra layer when things get colder it stay’s clean for days, washes well, is singularly distinctive and lets you blend in even in the garden.

Similarly, the camo umbrella is the shooting man’s alternative to the usual golfing variety and looks equally at home in the countryside or city centre. Large enough to keep you and your kit dry, the twin skin ensures there’s a decent circulation of air whilst every drop of rain is efficiently re-directed.

Overall some well made, good looking and practical items to complement the shooter

For: Some excellent clothing and designs
Against: Nothing
Verdict: WEven if you don’t shoot a Browning well worth a look
