Buck Flashpoint Orange and Revel Blue

By: Pete Wadeson

Though I’m impressed with most in the Buck Omni-Hunter series, I feel their new Flashpoint and Revel folders will appeal to other hunters and outdoorsmen. Reason being they’re not mainly aimed at deer or larger game as these (though one is even strong enough to cut through small bone) are for the hunter needing a useful in-field gutting and paunching tool. Both have 420HC stainless steel blades, feature a frame-type grip with very individual casings and strong pocket/belt clips.

Flashpoint

First up is the snazzy and aptly named Flashpoint Orange - also available with black or blue coloured handle. Measuring 4 ½” closed, weighing 4oz and holding a 2 7/8” partially serrated, modified, drop point blade. The metallic orange anodised handles are manufactured from 6061 – T6 Aluminium and boast a useful black rubberised inlay to aid grip.

You can deploy the blade with one hand with what Buck calls “SafeSpin open/close technology”, without having to place their hand or fingers near it. All you do is hold the handle securely but not allowing any finger to wrap around the blade. Then using your thumb, retract the large, square locking catch located in the centre of the handle behind the pivot point. Now place your index finger on the ‘blade rotator’ (the serrated section above/behind the pivot) and roll it open to lock when you release the locking catch. Reverse the procedure to close it. The Flashpoint incorporates a strong, sprung carabineer clip cum bottle opener in the rear top of the handle.

True blue

The Buck Revel Blue – also available with black or yellow coloured handle measures 3 ¾” closed, weighs 2.4oz and holds a fine edge 2 ½” drop point blade. Obviously designed for when finer and more delicate cutting is needed. I found it superb for breasting woodies and skinning any small game.

The handle is manufactured using a tough fibre glass reinforced nylon mix with a rubber texture over-mould affording a very sure hold. Having a similar opening mechanism to the ‘Flashpoint’ this finely contoured folder uses a push button instead of slide catch to release the blade and once again you can use the SafeSpin open/close technology.

The unique Flashpoint is highly attractive as it is versatile not to mention feels solid and strong in the hold. The part serrated blade lends itself to a myriad of tasks and opt for the ‘Orange’ version as shown, not one easily lost in the field. The Revel, though looking almost delicate in comparison, is still a solid design and build that’d even be handy to have near the preparing block for those delicate finer cuts when undertaking final preparation before cooking or freezing.
