Buck Knives

Buck Knives

As I’ve tested a few models of Buck blades and have always been impressed by the design and build quality, so here I’ve chosen three models of folding knives from three different Buck series.

Bucklite Max

The Bucklite Max range includes four models: two folders and their fixed blade counterparts. The model featured here is classed as the ‘large folder.’ Measuring 5-inches in the closed position and weighing 3.1oz it holds a 3 5/8-inches 420HC Stainless Steel clip point blade with dual thumbstuds for easy one-handed operation. The glass reinforced Nylon handle is quite slim in profile and textured for a nonslip grip. The finger choil adds extra security when holding and the handle is ergonomically designed for maximum comfort. It also has a lanyard hole, stainless steel belt/pocket clip at the rear and uses a rear positioned lock back mechanism for solidly securing the blade when in the deployed position. Overall this a very useful, practically designed, lightweight midsize folder. The Bucklite Max Folding (3.5/8-inches) is priced at £32.95.

Buck Vantage Select

The Buck Vantage Select range only consists of a large and small folder. Both use lock liner mechanisms with the large model featured here measuring 4.5-inches in the closed position and weighing 4.8oz. The 3.25-inch 420HC Stainless Steel drop point blade has an elongated thumbhole for one-handed operation and the glass reinforced nylon handle features a stainless steel reversible pocket clip. The handle is slightly more substantial than the Bucklite but is nicely contoured to afford a sure hold. The blade has a finger guard integral in the build so cleverly comes into play when the blade is deployed.

The Vantage models use a quite unique design of blade for safety and the practical slim handle – though looking basic offers a sure hold. The Buck Vantage Select (Large) is priced at £39.95.

Buck Omni

The Omni range of knives is possibly the most extensive with the choice of two sizes of fixed blade and three sizes of folder including the Omni Hunter ‘10PT Realtree Xtra Green model featured here. Measuring 4 5/8-inches in the closed position and weighing 4.6oz the outwardly quite chunky looking handle holds a 3.25-inch 420HC stainless steel drop point blade. Although dual thumbstuds are included for ease of opening, this blade is the most substantial being quite deep set and has a very solid lock back mechanism positioned approximately midway along the back of the handle.

Manufactured using Alcryn rubber the handle has a non-slip textured feel and you only fully appreciate the overall ergonomic yet very practical design when the knife is in the fully open position. The handle design is such that it curves inwards providing a very comfortable ‘shape’ for your hand to hold. Integral in the build is a finger choil with side ridging along the inner section plus an elongated lanyard hole at the rear. To give even more security in use the spine of the blade has a sensible run of ridging for the thumb. This particular model comes supplied with a heavy-duty camo nylon sheath.

The Omni series’ overall design elevates them to another level because in use the handle and blade work in perfect harmony. The Buck Omni Hunter 10PT Realtree Xtra Green is priced at £59.95. For details of all Buck knives contact Whitby and Co 01539 721032 or visit www.whitbyandco.co.uk
