Deben Endurance 30 Scope

Deben Endurance 30 Scope

Deben’s Hawke’s Endurance 30 range of scopes came out some time ago and I always thought they were a cut about the rest; especially with their signature, 30mm body tube. There are five models 1-4x24, 1.5-6x44, 2.5-10x50, 3-12x56 and a fixed 8x56 all with illumination (IR) with three reticule choices 30/30 Centre Cross, L4A Dot and LR Dot. On test is my favourite the 3-12x56 with LR Dot reticule.

The build uses a one-piece, 30mm body tube in matte black. Included are metal, flip-up lens covers with C-spanners so they can be positioned as required, 4” sunshade and battery. At 14.5” long and 26.6oz it’s the biggest and heaviest of the range. Features include a fast-focus eyepiece, rubber-covered magnification ring with raised lugs and a seamless, rheostat drum on the left of the saddle. Add in a 10-year warranty, nitrogen-purged, coated lenses and fog-proof and it adds up to an impressive specification!

5 OR 7 CONFUSED!

Turrets are hunter-types under screw-off caps. Click values are 1⁄4 MOA @ 100-yards. They offer 56-clicks per turn with 1 and 1⁄4-MOA subdivisions and confusingly five full turns in elevation yet seven in windage. The windage drum is marked from the centre with seven MOA in either direction, which makes winding in any corrections easier as you know which way you are going. In use the turrets click round firmly with positive stops and are nicely audible too, so no real problems counting the movements.

The 3-12x56 came with Hawke’s latest reticule the LR (long range) Dot. It looks like a No 4 with three thick posts at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock with a fine cross coming down from 12 o’clock. The centre is open with a free dot as the aiming point, which is also the only thing that’s illuminated. Below this are two stadia than can be used for holdover points for any form of airgun or firearm. The Hawke website offers a downloadable Ballistic Reticule Calculator (BRC) so you can set up as required such as: metric or imperial notation, rangefinding calculations, change zero distances and many more as well as storing your data or even saving it to portable ballistic software.

JUST RIGHT

In use this 2nd focal plane (SFP) reticule is bold enough to see without overpowering the view and with the two range stadia on the 6 o’clock arm allows you to determine drop points according to what ammunition/pellets you are firing. At 100-yards at x 12 magnification the centre dot subtends an inch, so making it a good point and shoot option. With its multi-coated lenses the 30 Endurance range offers a bright and crisp image with good low light performance.

The rheostat is seamless in that you just wind it up to increase illumination with no annoying pre-sets. It has ON and OFF markings and a widening taper around the drum to indicate level. At lower settings the dot was a bit lopsided in shape in that it was not lit concentrically, but that soon went as the brightness was increased. Good was the fact even at maximum it’s not too bright, which is probably the best way to be, as opposed to some that blaze out and fuzz the reticule.

At the money a good scope with many uses given the model options.
