Enzo Trapper Knife Kit

Enzo Trapper Knife Kit

There are many options in the kits, while the blade shape and dimensions remain the same - 210mm long, with a 95 x 25mm deep blade section in scandi or a full flat grind. They use 3.55mm thick O1, D2 or S30V steels, with handle materials available in various wood or coloured micarta synthetics.

BASIC OR ADVANCED?

There are also two kits - basic and advanced. The former’s parts are ready to screw together and need a little sanding, I went for the latter. With their D2, scandi grind blade with black micarta handle, which as well as being cheaper, provides the same elements with the scales undrilled and unshaped, allowing me more creativity. The D2 is hard at 60-61hrc steel, with more rust resistance than the O1 though not as expensive as the S30V. Also included were two Corby rivets, and two vulcanised fibre liners which in my case were deep red in colour.

There were no instructions, but 10mins on the internet and a bit of common sense got my head around the kit. The best approach is to take it slow and steady and have a clear idea what shape you want to make the handle. You will need a vice (+ protective clamps), drill, 3/16 and 1/4” drill bits, epoxy glue, sand paper from 60-600 grit, and a wooden dowel to wrap it around. Set aside a day for the project, though I was all done in around four hours!

TIPS…

Cover the blade in card when working with it cos’ it’s sharp and may hurt you! Clamp covered blade in a vice along with one side of the scales to drill the small holes right through with the 3/16th bit at your chosen fixing point using the tang to guide the drill bit. Clamp the other side of the scales to the rest of it and drill through the opposite direction using the holes you just drilled to guide the new holes in the second scale. After this counter bore the scales around half their individual thickness with the ¼” drill so when you sand the whole lot after its glued and screwed together it looks clean with the bright sanded rivet tops set in the handle.

THE RESULTS…

I wanted something a bit different and modern, and was generally pleased with the finished knife. Leaving the back of the tang exposed as a glass breaker and making a larger bolster to keep fingers well away from what is an outstandingly sharp piece of steel, this was made cheaper and possibly better than with the advanced kit, as it leaves more room for your imagination……. and now to make the sheath!

FOR
Cost effective way of owning a great knife
AGAINST
Instruction not provided and no sheath included
VERDICT
Recommended for price and performance and a fun as a project
