Fallkniven PXL

Fallkniven PXL

The Fallkniven PXL is a substantial folding knife, that could quite easily take the place of a moderately sized fixed blade utility knife for hunting, general use around the camp or on the farm/shooting ground. In other countries it would be regarded as an EDC (every day carry) knife, but unfortunately in the UK, where the law penalises the law abiding rather than the criminals, it could only be carried in certain circumstances (see the BASC article below). Nevertheless, this folder is without a doubt the best that I’ve tested over the past twelve months – it’s a real quality item, but then that’s not unusual for a Fallkniven product.

Even the materials are exceptionally well chosen, with a blade made of 3G stainless steel hardened to HRC 62, while the handle frame and bolsters are in stainless steel and the grip scales are made of virtually indestructible ‘ivory’ micarta (a maroon micarta version is also available, but I personally prefer this one).

story continues below...

The 3G blade is triple laminated with a central core of high carbon steel powder steel given a very hard centre to make a sharp and long-lasting edge, sandwiched between the two side layers of VG2 stainless steel, which is extremely tough yet flexible. This steel is quite meaty at 0.14” (3.5mm) thick, and the shape of the blade is a classic drop point with the addition of a swaged edge on the spine. A pin passes through the spine near to the bolster, giving easy opening with either hand. The opening mechanism runs on self lubricating bearings and is silky smooth, while the liner lock is positive in lock-up yet easy to release. The liner steel is quite substantial – about 0.6” – and I can’t see this one losing its tension easily, which can be a real problem with some other liner locks.

The PXL comes with a strong, removable pocket clip with three anchor screws. This is another area of weakness in some other knives – I’ve had too many ‘clip’ knives that either lose the anchor screws or break off altogether - but the clip on the PXL looks built to last. The handle also has a small hole at the base to take a lanyard or ring.

The publicity notes on the PXL box gives a warning – or possibly just a reminder – to the effect that, “Please note that this folder is a precision instrument and a very sharp tool”…  Well I agree with that statement on both counts. This is certainly one of the most precise knives that I have encountered in a long time, and it’s also one of the sharpest straight from the box.

The PXL comes with a two-year warranty covering defects in materials and/or manufacture, and it costs £164.95 – quite hefty for a factory made knife, but in my opinion this really is something special. In fact, the Fallkniven PXL is without a doubt the best folding knife that I’ve had the pleasure to review so far this year, and is pretty much my idea of what a top quality folding knife for work/hunting should ideally be. In fact I’m so impressed that I’m actually going to buy it – but don’t tell my wife…
