Fallkniven TK5 hunter

When Fallkniven decided to make a series of world-class Swedish knives it was only natural that they chose the icon of their home country – the Tre Kronor or Three Crowns, Sweden’s coat of arms for 700 years. Special permission was granted for the use of the Tre Kronor symbol on these ‘TK’ knives, making them even more unique and collectable.

The TK series consists of six knives – four fixed blades and two folders - each offering modern blade materials, a highly advanced technological construction, combined with traditional Swedish design. After much research and development, Fallkniven are the first company in the world to be able to offer a triple laminated knife blade in 3G steel, edged with sintered (or powdered) steel. A resilient, anti-corrosive material is also added to this edge steel, which stabilises the hard centre. This gives a rigid, strong blade with good edge retention properties.

The TK1 and TK2 are fixed blade hunting/utility models each with an overall length of 8.4” and a 4” drop point blade. The two knives are identical apart from their handles and subsequent weight. The TK1 has cocobolo scales and weighs 6.6oz, while the TK2 has synthetic scales (Thermorun) and weighs 5.1 oz.

The TK3 and TK4 are identical folding knives with a well proven back-lock mechanism. The only difference between the two is once again the handle material and weight. The TK3 has traditional cocobolo scales and weighs 3.5oz, while the ultra lightweight TK4 has Zytel scales and weighs just 1.8oz. The drop point blade is 2.76” in length, while the closed length of both knives is a compact 3.8”.
Both are solid, secure folding knives, and the TK3 model is also available with some exotic handle materials; tiger wood, red quince, black quince, jigged bone or mother of pearl inset with abalone.
Finally we have the TK5 and TK6 fixed blade hunters, with the TK5 being the model supplied to for test. These knives too are of identical design, but with Thermorun scales on the TK6 and cocobolo on the TK5. The TK6 is therefore lighter at 4.2 oz while the TK5 weighs 5.6oz.
The test knife

The TK5 Tre Kronor De Luxe Hunter is a knife that anybody would be proud of, especially the experienced hunter and fieldsportsman. The 3.15” drop point-blade has the three crowns logo, 3G Steel and the TK5 model number etched into the left side of the flat, with Fallkniven Sweden on the ricasso. 

The blade is well shaped, sharp and compact, ideal for skinning and cleaning game. Although obviously designed for hunting, the blade also has finesse for more delicate tasks, while retaining real power for heavier utility use if required, offering a good grip and 0.18” blade thickness for strength. Unlike many other Scandinavian designed knives, the TK5 has a nickel silver bolster that also acts as a single quillion guard, and all the better for it in my opinion.

The handle construction is full tang with well shaped finger recesses for a good grip. Two rivets hold the cocobolo scales and a small metal medallion inset into the wood is decorated with the Three Crowns logo. A lanyard hole completes the handle,

As the manufacturer claims, any experienced hunter would certainly like this knife. Neither over-large or too small, it has the right shape and that excellent drop point-blade - made from first class laminated steel - to make it a versatile and efficient knife.

Every knife in the TK series is manually produced by experienced, skilled knife makers, which means that each knife is, to a certain extent, unique. The knife is supplied with a well fitted leather sheath, and comes complete in a smart black presentation box. Each TK knife has a two year guarantee (in normal use) covering material and manufacturing defects, for repair or replacement.

The TK5 is a high quality yet understated little knife, full deserving the status suggested by the Tre Kronor name.
