Gerber Tech Skin Pocket Knife

Gerber Tech Skin Pocket Knife

Everyone has a smartphone in their pocket, which can cause issues with keys and such scratching the delicate screens if you have them in the same pocket. Carrying a small knife in the same pocket as your precious phone means the phone will always come off worse, but Gerber have thought of this and come up with a smartphone-friendly pocketknife.

The Tech Skin, as the name would suggest, has a covering and features to ensure it does not in any way damage your phone when it is in close proximity to it, meaning rattling around with it in your trouser or coat pocket. The heart of the knife is the 56mm drop point blade made from 7Cr15 stainless steel and coated in a black surface finish to match the handle colour. It has ambidextrous thumb studs to open the knife, which are also rubber coated. This is a nice touch as many thumb studs are right-handed only, some can be swapped over by loosening an Allen bolt, by coating the stud in rubber this is not possible so they chose to put one on either side. The thumb studs fit snugly in cut outs on either side of the body. The blade locks with the un-locking lever on the spine of the knife, this sits under the rubber skin. There are two sets of two raised markings on the spine above the lever to help users easily locate it. There’s also a lime-green washer behind the Torx hinge bolt, which is a nice design touch.

Phone-Friendly

In the hand the Tech Skin feels very ‘grippy’ indeed; you will not drop this little knife in a hurry. It does not feel big in the pocket, even when sharing it with a smartphone. Gerber call the Zytel 101 coating ‘Techhide’. The edges are Zytel with area’s picked out in rubber, a large panel on each side and along sections of the spine – being able to still operate the lock system through the coating is a cool idea. There are four grooves along the top to provide a secure area for your thumb when cutting. There is no hole for a lanyard as it does not need one.

The Tech Skin is not a hunting or survival knife, but it does not purport to be. It is capable of cutting thick cardboard boxes, taking tough plastic ties off clothes and a myriad of household chores you sometimes have to try and do with your bare hands. With the softer covering you are not afraid to carry the little Gerber about in the same pocket or handbag (Or man-bag) compartment as your phone, which is the whole point of the Tech Skin. Just remember the UK EDC laws as the blade locks. At 30 quid it is good value when you consider the price of a smartphone. www.gerber-store.co.uk
