Global Target

Global Target

Airguns have one huge advantage over other forms of shooting: we are allowed to enjoy our sport in the comfort of our own back garden. Bear in mind that this includes overpopulated suburbia, with many of us lying cheek by jowl with our neighbours, and this basic right should never be taken for granted! Yes, it is a right, but with rights come responsibilities, and in our case, that means SAFETY.

Part of the remit for appreciating our freedom, has to be taking all reasonable precautions to eliminate the possibility of lead-shot leaving the legal boundaries of our property. A good back-stop is non-negotiable, and a solid target holder of some sort is a pre-requisite to safe shooting.

GAGT
Global Air Gun Targets (GAGT) may not be a familiar name to many, but their ‘Quiet Strike’ Target Holder deserves wide recognition. It’s completely designed and manufactured in the UK, and since I’ve just had one through for review, I can report that it’s an impressively robust target box, that really is built to last. The design sees a main outer box, constructed from zinc coated mild steel, and a suspended inner strike plate, made from 2mm galvanized steel.

story continues below...

The inner plate is hinged at the top, and moves slightly backwards to absorb the shot. A 1.75inch deep piece of foam sits behind the strike plate, which obviously helps to absorb noise and energy too. Whilst early designs used rubber backing, the simple foam presumably keeps costs down further. What matters though is the sheer quality and heavy duty construction, and whilst the target wasn’t silent, the impact strike is significantly muted.

Spent shot just hits the strike plate, and as it moves slightly back, the pellet falls neatly into the bottom of the box. All front edges of the outer box are deliberately facing inwards to avoid ricochets, and a keyhole style slot is cut into the reverse to allow the entire assembly to be wall mounted.

Paper/Card Targets
The design allows for a target card to be simply dropped into place, within the chunky slot running round the front rim, which measures 6.75” x 8”. The lid of the box is solidly constructed and swings upwards to allow access - either to replace the target, or empty the pellet fragments. When down, it overhangs the front, so protecting the target from rain and glare. The lid can add extra safety though by extending upwards by a further 3.75” when open, although the reinforced protection obviously comes from that inner strike plate.

I would always recommend a large steel sheet behind everything to catch stray shots, but for the main target holder, this product takes some beating. In the course of my work, I use a target holder all the time for gun tests, and my old cheap and nasty model is about due for renewal. With the back now ripped to shreds, I badly need a replacement and this GAGT ‘Quiet Strike’ has most definitely got the job; being by far the most robust and effective box type target holder, that I’ve encountered to date.

The GAGT is suitable for FAC airguns as well as 12ft/ lbs models, and with a 3mm heavy duty strike plate available for an extra £4.50, all bases are covered. At £17.99 plus £8 postage when bought direct, I reckon the ‘Quiet Strike’ Target Holder is a steal at the price. It’s an excellent design, and it’s made in Britain!
