Jack Pyke Lock Knives

By: Pete Wadeson

I’ve watched the Jack Pyke range of folding lock knives growing over time, and though always well-priced they have also always offered good quality too. Well they have done it again and I’ve chosen a trio of blades, similar in size but each offers something to suit an individual taste. Though all fulfil the necessary functions of a field knife, which is essentially gutting and skinning.

Stainless reputations

All are manufactured from stainless steel with 440HC stainless blades (that’s high quality SS) and feature a frame-type grip with wooden side-plates and a clothing clip. Although the blades are of different configurations all the range use a liner lock retention system. This places a strut behind the rear of the blade to keep it in position when deployed, which is simple pushed out of line to unlock and fold.  One-handed opening is allowed by twin thumb studs and all come with a black Nylon sheath with belt loop.

First up is the impressive looking Hunters, measuring 4 ½” closed it offers a 3 ½” broad yet fine edge ‘modified’ clip point blade with a bowed edge. The polished wood handles are comfortable to hold and attractive; weight is reduced by four lightening holes in the frame.

The Gamekeeper measures 4 ½” closed, with a more down-swept look to the frame and with its clip point, faceted 3”, fine-edge blade puts me a bit in mind of the Spyderco ATR (At The Ready). The wooden side-plates have an almost dolphin-like profile but in the hold suit this knife perfectly. Even more of a bonus is the hump at the rear of the blade, which is gimped to offer extra thumb purchase should you want to put some effort into the cut!

Breaking the mould

The Woodsman breaks from tradition by not only being the lightest of the three but also due to its wasp-like handle shape, which chokes up at the front and expands into the palm of the hand at the back. The blade is a 3” hybrid clip/spear point with fine edge blade. The side plates are a wood laminate and contrast nicely against the blacked frame.

There’s a finger choil up front and the top/rear of the blade is again gimped for extra purchase. Of the three models I found the blade shape on the Woodsman to be the best for preparing animals, as the long/tapered tip allows easy access to even small areas. The liner lock on all knives is almost as thick as the blade it holds in position, giving you a sense of security rarely found in this price bracket.
All come with a 1-year guarantee and in my opinion are exceptional value for money.
