Kershaw Select Folding Knife

The Select Fire was built to be a knife-focused multi-tool. Designed by Grant & Gavin Hawk, it offers a substantially sized, useful blade and a 5-piece bit screwdriving set (including the bit driver). Overall the knife is 7.5” open and about 4” closed. The sabre point blade is 3.4” long and is made of 8CR13MoV stainless steel. It has an ambidextrous thumb stud through the spine to aid easy single-handed opening and is substantial enough for most everyday tasks without being too large. It has a standard liner-lock mechanism.

The handle is made of tough, black, glass-reinforced nylon and though unusually contoured it nevertheless sits in the hand well. The fold-away driver bit holder pivots out from the upper edge of the handle, and the four bits (a large and medium flat-head and No.1 & 2 Phillips cross-head) are stowed in swing-out spring loaded holders on either side of the handle flats. This means that it would be almost impossible to lose the standard ¼” hex bits, although they could be easily and cheaply replaced even if you did – you might also decide to carry different ones that suit you better. When deployed the bit holder extends approximately 2.5” from the end of the knife, giving a good reach when used as a screwdriver. A sprung pocket clip completes the handle scales, and this can be easily switched to the other side.

It’s a shame that the UK knife laws would make this illegal to carry in most public situations, because its features would make it a good EDC knife. However, it’s a versatile tool that can legitimately be used by tradesmen and sportsman, and it’s available for an unbelievable price – just £26.95.
