KG Coatings, Cleaners & Lubricants

We Brits are no strangers to KG cleaning and gun maintenance products, as this American brand has been available to us for some time. However, the original importers moved on, so now Rupert Haynes (Open Season Ltd) is the man to speak to.

I have used KG for general gun care, copper removal and specialised lubrication so I am happy with the product. However, they have always offered a coating service, which gives a choice of colours and more importantly will apply a tough finish to your guns and equipment. KG is not just involved in the gun industry; as you can imagine there are many applications for all their products. Rupert is finalising the installation of an oven and the rest of the gear to offer this facility, which I will be looking at in greater details later on. This time is more a Round Robin of the products you as shooters should be considering.

KG-1 Carbon Remover™ Step 1: This was the first product introduced to the shooting industry to specifically meet the need to remove carbon build up and is the first step in the cleaning process. Formulated to be environmentally friendly it contains no ammonia; result! The mix is pH neutral and is ideal for removing carbon build-up of all propellant types from blackpowder to smokeless.

KG-2 Bore Polish™ Step 2:  KG-2 was originally developed to maintain the bore integrity of sniper rifles, it contains no ammonia and uses a mechanical method to remove the worst of copper and lead build-up and is the second step in the cleaning process. In most cases it will perform exceptionally well in removing copper and lead with quality patches alone. KG says a nylon brush is to be
preferred if you need to get more aggressive…

***********
KG-3: is a non-chlorinated, ozone-safe formula used to remove the residue loosened by KG-1 and KG-2 and is also used for cleaning and de-greasing parts. It contains a special formulation of fast drying, water-displacing solvents which will rapidly cut through oil and grease and leave no residue. It’s especially useful for preparing surfaces for spraying and neutralising bore cleaning residues prior to firing.

*********
KG-4 Gun Oil™ Step 3: The last link in the protection chain. KG-4 met the stringent requirements set forth in the original Military Specification Mil-L-63460 D. It is a blend of the finest lubricants available and contains no synthetics. With very low surface tension it exhibits excellent lubrication properties and provides outstanding corrosion protection. It also has the ability of keeping current firing residue in suspension; so allowing easier cleaning.
**********
KG-5 Trigger Lube™: This formulation is specifically for trigger mechanisms. It is a blend of lubricants; including P.T.F.E. and provides excellent lubrication and corrosion protection. Equally it will keep trigger pulls even and smooth.

KG-6 Moly Armorkote Bore Prep: Developed to offer the advantages of Moly to both reloaders and those who buy factory ammo. Formulated with Molybdenum Disulfide suspended in fine oil, this product is a superior lubricant, does not need to be shaken and has an affinity for metal. It will embed a very thin film of Moly onto the bore that will aid in reducing fouling. Reports indicate 50 to 100 round strings without cleaning

**********
KG-7 Moly Armorkote Powder:  KG uses only the finest grade of Molybdenum Disulfide powder so that you can moly-coat your bullets for maximum performance.

***********
KG-8 Micro PTFE Dry Lube: This new technology grinds the Teflon molecule to half of its molecular weight, creating a low surface tension lube. The result produces a multi purpose lubricant which greatly reduces friction and wear more effectively then the normal Teflon. Use it where a dry no-mess lubricant is required, i.e. triggers, slides, etc. It is especially useful for conceal and carry weapons where oil can be a problem.

***********
KG-9 Micro PTFE Leather Kote:  A little different is KG-9 which is used on leather. By incorporating new micro technology Teflon with a combination of fine silicone lubricants and then adding the ability to suspend these into a paste, KG has developed a revolutionary leather lubricant. The friction coefficient once burnished will dramatically improve the material and reduce wear.

***********
KG-10 Micro Moly Dry Lube:  A highly effective MOS2 multi-purpose lubricant which greatly reduces friction and wear. It goes on wet, penetrates and dries leaving a pure, Moly, dry film that will protect and lubricate without attracting dirt or dust. Use it on triggers, slides, etc. Shake well before using. Re-apply if you want to build up the protection.
******************
KG-11 Moly Grease:  This new product is based on the formulation of KG-4 Gun Oil and Technical Fine Grade Molybdenum disulfide powder. The result of blending theses two products produced a grease which will provide a lubricant that will reduce wear and prevent seizure of dissimilar metals and other alloys in sliding motion parts. So a good bet for where alloy and steel comes in to regular contact…

**********
KG-12 was developed for the military for big bore cannons, so will provide shooters with a product which will remove the toughest of copper fouling without harming the bore! Which is down to the fact it’s not ammonia-based, so doesn’t need neutralising nor is time-sensitive in application. Water-based it contains no synthetics. When used in conjunction with KG-2, 3 and 4 it offers a total and effective cleaning system.
As can be seen KG offers a wide range of products that will not only aid in keeping your guns clean but also improve operation and extend their effective working lives too. The cleaning kit speaks for itself, but I would say take a closer look at their specialist oils and greases as they too can make a big difference.

Average prices vary from between £9-12, with the Moly products rising to £17-22.
