Maxbox Rifle Rest

Maxbox Rifle Rest

When a lot of solutions to a problem have been sought, sometimes it’s the simple answers that turn out to be the cleverest. When it comes to the search for a truly practical bench or vehicle rest, the Maxbox rifle rest is just such a solution. No awkward steel contraptions; no heavy bags; just a block of tough foam and some plastic-coated magnets.

Two models are available: the original Maxbox and the Door Pro. Both are lightweight but resilient thanks to their high-density foam construction, which also makes them weather-proof, shock-proof, and kind to your firearms. The foam used is also resistant to solvents, so the Maxbox can also safely be used as a support when cleaning your guns.

The Maxbox

The original Maxbox rest has a rectangular cross-section with rectangular channels of two different widths cut into each opposing pair of sides. Just tip the block left or right to raise or lower the rest height, or tip it twice to switch to a wider or narrower channel to fit a wider or narrower rifle stocks. I said it was simple.

Set into the foam on either side of each channel is a plastic-covered neodymium magnet. These allow the rest to be secured to any metal surface (vehicle bonnet, roof, etc.) quietly, and without modification or even leaving marks. What’s more, the magnetic contact allows the shooter to slide or turn the rest as needed to get the best position possible. Nevertheless, the magnets are strong enough that the rest can be left in place when driving between calling points, as they will resist an airstream of up to a 55 mph. Now that’s clever.

The Door Pro

While the original Maxbox is as much at home on a bench at the range or in the gun room, the latest variant, the Door Pro, has a more specific application. As its name suggests, it is designed to facilitate shooting from inside a vehicle. To do this a taller rectangular foam block has a deep channel cut crossways through it and the excised material is further divided into a spacer block and a rifle support, with two parallel grooves of different widths cut into it.

For use, the window is lowered to the desired height and the main block dropped over the sill. If the vehicle has narrow doors (e.g. Defender) then the spacer can be used to give a good fit. Alternatively, it can be placed on top of the main block to raise the rifle support. As with the standard version, magnets – now paired up with powder-coated steel inserts - hold everything together and allow the rifle support to slide or swivel as desired. And when you’ve finished, the rifle support and spacer can be stowed neatly away into the central slot.

A Light Portable Solution

In either case, no nuts, bolts, screws, straps or heavy metal brackets are involved. Instead you get a light, portable solution to several problems at once, in the case of the standard version, and an equally good solution to a single problem in the case of the Door Pro. The price? Just £50 for the standard Eagleye Hunting Gear Maxbox and £55 for the Door Pro.
