The Bowie

This Bowie is a solid handful, and must be described as a “big’un” for all practical purposes, but quite a standard size for that substantial section of the custom handmade knife market – the Bowie knife collectors.

It is of ‘through tang’ construction and has a 10 1/2” x 1 3/4” clip-point blade made of 6mm O1 tool steel, convex ground, edge quenched and cryogenic treated (a speciality of Mick). Other features include deep filework on the spine and a sharpened edge on the clip. The handle is made from well figured Thuya burr in a mottled colour that was once described to me as ‘honey and tobacco’, and is finished with a nickel silver guard and end cap. How much could you expect to pay for a handmade Mick Wardell knife of this quality? Around £600 plus p&p.
 
The Broadsword

I wasn’t aware that Mick made swords, so this was a surprise, although the fact that he made them so well was not. The sword features a 66cms (26”) long x 3.8cms wide x 7mm thick
carbon damascus blade flat ground with fullers almost the entire length . 
 
The sword has an 8 cms (7”) wide crescent guard is nickel silver and has oak leaf engraving. The grip is Thuya burr measuring 15cms (6”) with a leather spacer behind the guard and nickel silver end cap and pommel. Overall length of the sword is 86.5cms (34”) and it weighs in at 1.5kgs.  How much would it cost? Well that’s hard to say, as this one was made for a client and Mick reckons it may be his last sword due to all the work involved… however, if you have the readies - you might be able to make him an offer he can’t refuse.
