Napier Universal Rifle Pull-through Kit

I was talking to Steve Rowe (MD) Napier of London at the T&G show and he showed me his latest product – the Universal Rifle Pull-through Kit. Napier is no stranger to gun maintenance as they offer their VP 90 corrosion inhibitor plus oils and fluids based on it,  along with their Ultra Clean patch material.

Ultra Clean is quite literally a brush and mop on a single roll of cloth, as it has smooth and rough sides so offers a safe abrasive action for removing debris and firing residue from the bore. The reverse is smooth so will give a final finish and polish. Being self-amalgamating (it sticks to itself) it will not unwind and can be used as an exterior cleaning cloth (polishing mitt) too.

High Performance/Dual Action

The heart of the kit is the Ultra Clean cloth, though it’s in pre-cut (92x15mm) patch form as opposed to a roll. Along with this a coated, cable pull-through with T-handle that ends in a nylon loop. Also included are 100-patches and Napier’s gun cleaning spray, which is refillable (adaptor included) and five sachets of VP90 wipes. All this is contained in a neat, green nylon zip pouch with handle and belt loop, with enough room for tools etc.

I adhere to a strict maintenance regime for my rifles, using rods/jags, patches, cleaning and copper removal fluids. However, I never take it into the field, so the Napier kit offers me an effective and portable solution that will address all calibres I use. As we have seen the patch size is constant so to adjust to bore size a specific number are used. For example .17” needs two whereas .45” requires eight. Full instructions are included, which includes how many you need for each calibre.

Economic

The job is simple and as the patches are double-sided it’s economical too, as they can be used twice for initial cleaning then final polishing. Being self-amalgamating they stick together easily yet can be peeled apart too. Start by squirting some gun cleaner down the bore and leaving for a few minutes. Next slide the pull-through in from the muzzle and when it appears at the other end, load it with the required number of patches; rough side facing towards the bore.

Pull through and remove the top patch and place it at the bottom of the pack and repeat. In this way you are making maximum use of the cloth. Once you are clean reverse the pack and polish in the same manner; it’s a simple as that… For me I find the kit is a god send for my 17HMR, which will shoot ½” for around 250-rounds then lose it big style. So a quick and efficient pull-through system gives me 100%s field maintenance.

One thing I would caution you on is the patches; use Napier only as they are designed for the job; do not use anything else…
