Nextorch New Star & Torches

Nextorch New Star & Torches

If you want it plain, simple and tough then have a look at the Nextorch New Star.
We are bombarded by compact, hi-power torches these days and to be honest they all work well to a greater or lesser degree. However, some do tend to be a little over complicated with strobe effects, SOS signals and variable power outputs. Useful? Perhaps, but what most of us really want is something that’s easy to switch on, gives out enough light and is tough.

With that in mind we turn your attention to the Nextorch New Star, as it keeps it simple. Measuring 87x22mm it fits easily in the hand and runs on a single CR123-cell that gives an output of 75-lumen and a 2-hour plus run time, which is pretty good! At the rear is a lanyard stub with a strong split ring attached.

So far nothing too radical, but where the New Star differs is in its switching system as the build gives a totally waterproof ability. It uses a simple, rotary ON/OFF drum at the back, which operates by magnets so there’s no physical connection to the rest of the build which is sealed and unscrews to access the battery. Nextorch say the New Star is good for a depth of up to 100m, something we have no interest in proving though it certainly stayed tight under water. All we care about is that it will work in the rain – so that’s another box ticked.

The compact Nextorch New Star is neat and simple with a decent output and a reasonable price at £38.95. It has an efficient little design with easy, one-handed operation and no worries about what mode you might be in when all you need is a light in the darkness.

Our second torch is the Nextorch GT6A which is a tough looking cookie and has a durable nylon fibre housing claimed to be capable of withstanding pressure up to one ton. The GT6A uses a 6V Xenon lamp assembly produces a powerful clear beam with an 80 lumen output. Power comes from two NT123A 3V Lithium batteries that should be capable of powering the lamp for up to 60 minutes of continuous use. It’s a lightweight and compact unit, weighing in at just 65g and only 124mm (4¾in) in length. The body diameter is 29mm with a lens head diameter of 34mm.

The non-conductive surface of the GT6A’s casing make it an ideal tool for industrial or agricultural use, where it may be encounter environments that contain high voltage equipment, or flammable and dangerous chemicals. However, we are more concerned in sporting use, so it’s nice to see that the GT6A is also available as a Hunting Kit, comprising the torch, a universal nylon mounting kit for fixing to a scope, a remote pressure switch with cable and replacement cap, a spare bulb and two batteries.

At just £16.95 for the torch alone, the Nextorch GT6A has to be considered a really good buy. It’s tough, reliable and - like the New Star – it’s easy to use, making it ideal as an everyday personal light. For just an extra £8 you can go for the complete Hunting Kit which sells for an incredible £24.95 – an absolute bargain!
