Princeton Tec Remix and Apex Pro

Best known as the Leatherman and Wenger distributors, Whitby & Co also bring in Princeton Tec which is a range of LED torches and lamps. Both models perfectly suit the nighthunter but offer different layouts and specifications. The Remix weighs 83g whilst its water-resistant ABS lamp head measures 60x45x30mm.

Above the norm

The all-white LED cluster is cleverly configured and elevates this model above the norm. Illumination consists of a single Maxibright unit and next to it is a triple cluster of three Ultrabright LED’s. The lamp head also houses the 3 X AAA batteries, (supplied) that power it.

This light and compact design has a large, push button switch ideally located on the top or bottom of the unit; depending on which way you wear it. It’s easy to find and makes operation a doddle, even when using gloves. Classed as dual-power, operation allows you to toggle between illumination levels and selection of what bulb you want to use. On full power (45 lumens) you get an approximate run time of 200 hours. With a 5-year guarantee, and though quite basic, the Remix is a clever design for your pocket or back pack.

Superseded

The Apex Pro now supersedes the once flagship Apex’ headtorch and uses Maxibright and multiple Ultrabright LED’s but this time in a more substantial package that offers greater range and ability. An output of 130 Lumens is obtained on the highest setting from the centre positioned, 3-Watt, main white LED. This is flanked by four (two per side) smaller LED that are stacked vertically. There’s a handy battery power indicator set below the main beam. Fully waterproof down to 1M it weighs 190g. The 2 x CR123 batteries (supplied) are housed in a compartment at the rear. The elasticated head band goes around the brow and over the crown and gives good stability and comfort.

Operation is by two large pressure switches which are positioned on the underside of the tilting lamp head. In my opinion after using the Remix I feel this is a better placement, as it’s much easier to switch on with your thumb while tilting the lamp down into position.

A heat sink is integral to the casing to stop any nasty build up and the regulated current affords a brighter/longer run time rated as 100 hrs. The switches work independently but offer five, settings of high, medium and low, including fast and slow emergency flash.

Though quite pricey at just under £100, when you consider the 10-year warranty, the Princeton Tec Apex Pro available in Black, Orange or Camo easily shows why it’s leader of the pack.
