Princeton-Tec Remix Head Torch

Princeton-Tec Remix Head Torch

I am always on the lookout for gear that is functional, practical, tough and versatile. It if is affordable and lightweight as well, then so much the better.

Over the years I have tried a fair few of the Princeton-Tec range of head torches and found them excellent. With the new Remix model that has both red and white LEDs, I think they may have produced my ideal outdoor head torch.

Basically, they have taken their very useful Fuel head torch and mixed in some new features and technology to give a torch that ticks all my boxes. The torch body measures some 6cm x 4.5cm x 3cm and attaches to a fully adjustable, soft and comfortable 2.5cm wide elasticated headband by means of a rigid plastic plate. The body of the torch is attached to the plate by an asymmetric single arm bracket with a positive action pivot. On the end of the body, not attached to the plate, there is an easy-to-open, but secure, battery access. On the top of the body there is a large push button switch that is designed to be easy to use even if you are wearing gloves.

The Remix uses 3x AAA batteries (either standard Alkaline or rechargeable NiCads or NiMH) to power the LEDs and you can use either the three Ultrabright red LEDs or the single Maxbright white LED. When you first press the button on top of the torch body, it switches on the red LEDs on low power, a setting that gives a light that is good to approx. 10 metres and – with new Alkaline batteries – will keep burning for up to 200 hours. A second press on the button within 1.6 seconds switches you up to high power on the red LEDs, giving light up to 28 metres for up to 61 hours. Red light is kind to your night vision and is ideal for checking close items at night without leaving you ‘night blind’ when you switch off. Again, red light is less startling than white light to wildlife.

To switch up to white light, press and hold the button and the torch cycles up to low-power white, giving a reach of 53 metres for up to 53 hours and a second press within 1.6 seconds will cycle the torch to high-power white light with a reach of up to 73 metres with a duration of up to 28 hours. Rechargeable batteries will not give these maximum figures, due to their lower nominal voltage.

To cycle back to red light, just press and hold the button. To switch the torch off, press the button once, after 1.6 seconds have elapsed since you last pressed it. The Remix has a power output rating of 100 lumens and weighs only 83g with batteries.

Although not rated as waterproof, the Remix is highly water-resistant and has stood up well to Welsh rain, as well as proving tough enough to take a battering in my bag. Small enough and light enough to be unnoticed in my kit, the Remix is powerful enough to be really useful in the field, while the red light coming on first is a feature I find very useful when, as I normally do, I want to preserve my night vision.

All in all, I think that the Princeton-Tec Remix Head Torch with white and red LEDs is a great little torch for all-round work outdoors, and it is affordable at around £39.95. A version with white LEDs only is also available.
