Ridgelight Verminator GII Handheld Spotlight Kit

Certain products compete in what I would term as a saturated market, a case in point being shooting lamps. OK they are not all the same with the dictates of airgun hunters works at shorter range very different from the fox shooter who requires more illumination out further. In other words, lamps are chosen for their specific features and the Verminator GII is one of the most basic I’ve tested in quite some time. The kit includes a 12 Volt, 55 Watt, hand-held lamp, 7amp/hr 12V Gell Cell battery with pouch and a mains charger unit.

The lamp is surprisingly small with a 4 “ handle, 4 ¾” main housing with a 4” diameter blue- tinged lens. The edge of the front of the housing has a ridged outer ring which would lead you to think the output can be adjusted from spot to flood. This is not the case as it’s pre-set and gives a tight beam out to approximately 150-yds. The coiled power lead is 12 foot long and ends in a familiar cigarette- style plug will connect to the vehicle supply or a battery via a socket-type adaptor.

Solid Switching

The main redeeming feature of the light apart from its compact size is it has a solid switching system. Rather than a push button or rocker it has a rubber-covered metal toggle, which pushes up for ON. The battery is contained in a nylon carry case with a detachable adjustable shoulder strap and belt loop. The whole package measures 6 ½ x 5 x 3 ½”. A nice feature is the elasticated loop that holds the female power socket on the right hand side rather than it dangling free.

The Verminator GII is certainly aimed at air rifle and maybe even rimfire night hunters. It’s possibly the most basic handheld of its type that I’ve tested in quite some time but the price should be an indication of this. There’s no optional filter and also, build quality isn’t stunning and you only get 25-30 mins continuous run time. However, if you mainly shoot air rifle, don’t do much lamping and only require a very basic kit for your mate to handle while you shoot, it’d be fair to say the Ridgelight Verminator GII Handheld Spotlight Kit will do the job quite adequately.

For: Does the job well enough at cheap money

Against: Short effective range best suited to airgun and maybe rimfire use

Verdict: Good enough if you keep it short range and want to save some money
