Rowan Engineering Retro fit bits

Rowan Engineering supplied me with their new cocking bolt, barrel sleeve, barrel band and single-shot loading clip for the Air Arms S410K PCP. I’ve already detailed their set back trigger blade in a Workshop article, so let’s see how they all come together.

Unscrew and Slide

Removed the silencer by unscrewing the grub screw that secures it onto the muzzle spigot and slide it off. For the original barrel band remove the two small recessed grub screws found just below the centre line either side, then ease it forward and off. Take care doing this as you are pulling the upper seal along the barrel, only a short way but keep things inline and it won’t be a problem.

The barrel sleeve just slides down and stops when it hits the action block, but ensure the flat side faces the barrel as you do so. A drop of oil between the two components makes the job easier and a tweak of the grub screw keeps it secure. With the original barrel band removed, choose which O-ring to fit into the recess in the top hole.

You have two options of grip using either of the two O-rings supplied. Whichever you choose the barrel is still cushioned from metal to metal contact - it’s the greater clearance hole for the barrel that allows firm and medium support. You can even remove it completely to have a fully floating tube. I choose the firm fit seal. The set-back trigger you saw in a previous workshop piece has caused quite some interest. Reason being the set back is approximately 6mm compared to the original.

Bolt Up

Now the Cocking bolt, it offers two-styles and three finishes plus the option of stainless steel too. I opted for the ball to ball version, a bit chunkier than the standard offering and more curved. So a slightly faster catch up on the return of the hand has another pellet ready to go if using as a multi-shot. A word of caution, you get instructions but the bolt is screwed and glued in place. To remove carefully apply some heat using a hairdryer, not a lot is needed and once it loses its grip slip off the spigot and re-fit your bolt of choice.

The single shot loader is aimed at the HFT competitor, so you’ve no need to remove the magazine as you change lanes to indicate the rifle is safe. Rowan claims a more accurate feed and less potential damage to the pellet than using a magazine. It works a treat and like the Daystate version - clips on to the rifle using the same method as the parent magazines. Cocking the rifle pops open the loader for the next pellet and it will fit all AA multi-shots that accept the standard magazine.

Winner All The Way

So with the modified action back in my custom Tawnado stock how does it all come together! The trigger feels great and offers a high level of control, which is what you want and it certainly has made a difference to my rifle! Likewise the bolt handle as it just seems to add something, it might be imagined but hey if it makes you shoot better then it works! The firmer hold I’d given the barrel did seem to give a tad more accuracy too. Most retrofit units are available black anodised and white aluminium or brass.
