Schmidt & Bender 2.5-10 x 56 Klassik Scope

Schmidt & Bender 2.5-10 x 56 Klassik Scope

These days all optical manufactures are offering new models with improved features that purport to being better than what has come before. Yes these can make a difference as I will attest to, but by the same token; if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! All I really require from a scope is optics that can perform in low light, simplicity and a bomb-proof build, sure I’ll take illumination and side focus etc., but it’s not always necessary.
A good example of this is Schmidt & Bender’s Klassik range, which they still offer today alongside their new and improved Zenith series. The name says it all as it’s a more old school design, but is still an excellent choice. Before I go any further I’d like to thank the importers York Guns as they have kindly donated the 2.5-10x56 on test in our free entry competition on page ????? of this issue. The reason they picked this model was in their opinion it’s probably the near ultimate spec for a hunting scope and I would tend to agree.

More than Enough

The magnification range is more than enough for all needs, plus the big, 56mm objective along with the quality lens system makes low light work just that bit easier. This one has an illuminated reticule too; though not essential, they are of use. The build is pleasing with a 30mm, one-piece body tube and a coned/parallel shaped objective, which is preferable to the rounded look of their Zenith, which always puts me in mind of a torch.
The magnification ring shows a rubber gripping band with raised lug and there’s a fast-focus eyepiece. Turrets are simple though show the original-style reticule position indicator drums under, low, waterproof caps; on the left is the 11-position rheostat. Perhaps the only consideration with the big, 56mm objective is mounting in terms of rings high enough to allow clearance. The Klassik is not small and measures 15 ½” and weighs 22 oz.

The hunter-style turrets are low and show S&B’s unique reticule position indicator system. Inset at 6 o’clock is a tiny clock dial marked M (centre) T (down) and H (up). As you rotate the drum the pointer will move according to the direction you have moved, in essence it shows you how much movement you have left in terms of correction. This is identical for elevation too though shows L and R accordingly.
Click values are 1cm @ 100-metres or .36” @ 100-yards, so pretty much three clicks to the inch with the latter. There are 40-clicks per turn (14.4”) with 3 ¾-rotations (54”), with elevation being identical. The rheostat offers 11-positions and can be positioned between numbers to offer quick re-acquisition.
Being a Schmidt the reticule is in the 1st focal plane, which means the more or less magnification you wind in bigger or smaller the reticule gets accordingly which - depending on the size of the grid - can be an issue. I have their 3-12x42 Klassik with their No 9, which does come a bit thick at x12.

Too Thick, Too Thin?

The 2.5-10x56 offers the choice of four, illuminated reticules; this example has the L7 fine, which is pretty much a #4 – three-thick bars at 3, 9 & 12 o’clock and a thin inverted cross coming down from 12. The centre is left open with a slim, free-floating cross, which is the only thing that lights up. Also available are the L1 German Post 3-bar type, L3 closed in version of the L7 with a round centre dot and the L9 which has a circled cross hair in the middle.
For general use the L7 gets my vote though it’s a bit slim at x2.5, which is where the illumination can help. If that’s not your style the slightly larger round dot of the L3 should suit, though the pointed post of the L1 might be to your tastes.
Whatever, as long as you can get on with a 1st focal plane system the Klassik series has a lot to offer with five models including a 4-16x50 long range with side focus and a 1.5-6x42.

For: High quality build and design
Against: 1st focal plane; love or hate it
Verdict: Excellent all-round spec
