Sierra Infinity V6 Suite

Progress is good isn’t it? When my last PC died of serious old age, I decided to sensibly skip Vista and go to the top with their latest Windows7. The speed at which my Sierra Infinity V will run, is going to be great. Wrong; as it would not run it, so I progressed further into this new world and treated myself to version six.

Armed with knowledge

Armed with two pieces of data Infinity will calculate energy, bullet path and wind drift of any load through a specific rifle. All you need is the muzzle velocity, weight/type of bullet then enter it, press the load button and your ballistic table appears.
Most manufactures of bullets and ammunition are listed and all have been updated to give a broad coverage of what is available. My only slight niggle is that all the calibre-specific data is for most factory cartridges but not all those that contribute data to the program. I know this should not matter as they are only generic figures from a test barrel. But for some when making the choice about what to purchase this would at least allow them to make an informed decision.

Rimfire magic

However, along with all the centrefire information Sierra have now included rimfire data, from all the major manufacturers in the four calibres – 17HM2, 17HMR, 22 LR and 22 WMR. This is exceptional as it’s now possible to work up a complete table of corrections based on ballistics rather than firing lots of shots in a field at various ranges and seeing what happens. With the quality of rifles and ammunition available and the introduction of 17HMR this new feature to Infinity V6 is excellent. With today’s advances it should be possible to make longer range shooting as precise as with centrefires.

Other Changes

But Sierra has not stopped there in terms of changes. One of the best and most simple is to the calculated table which now has the range increments split by colour (white then green row). It’s certainly easier on the eyes when looking at the monitor for long periods of time.

There are new elements too such as the Twist Rate and the Recoil Calculators. One of the most useful new features is within the trajectory file. Scroll down to tactical and you can have your table in either MIL-DOT or MOA (minute of angle) hold over/off and this incorporates shooting at angles using the quick fix method, tip top.

Plus with the full Suite version you also get in the same package all Sierra’s reloading data. Which at the price is very good as your average hard copy manual is going to set you back £30-50, so if you’re into rolling your own it makes a lot of sense.
All in all V6 is great improvement over the old Infinity suite and should be a must for any reloader or long range shooter.

For: Updated and improved and will run on Windows7 and Vista
Against: Very little
Verdict: The most user-friendly ballistics package just got a whole lot better

  • I have used the Infinity product for years and recently upgraded to V6. I expected alot more in terms of user interface improvements. This remains a very "clunky" program to use and its obviously being built by engineers without any knowledge of how shooters want to use the product for making bullet performance decisions.

Although I am sure the calculations are accurate, this program requires lots of going back over and over minor adjustments to get comparisons done, and seems to have a mind of its own when it comes to allowing you access to its data tables for adjusting performancee inputs.

Pretty disappointing effort for an upgrade in my opinion as without a couple new calcuators (bullet twist etc.) its just basically a rehash of their old version and they need to hire a programmer to put a real user interface together.
