SOG Jungle Canopy Knife

SOG Jungle Canopy Knife

We look at the SOG Jungle Canopy Knife - a seriously big piece of cutting kit for safari or expedition use

Big knives – you either love them or hate them… but very few of us actually need them. If you are one of those lucky few that do, then take a look at this – the SOG Jungle Canopy Knife – as it seems to be a really good heavy duty tool.

‘For The Primitive In All Of Us…’

That’s the promotional blurb for the SOG Jungle Canopy, and this knife certainly touches a spot somewhere in the shooter’s psyche… As can be seen, it is a real handful of steel, in fact even the makers can’t decide whether it is a big knife, a small machete, or a survival tool – I would suggest the latter, as although it is undoubtedly large, it is not overtly aggressive looking, and it balances extremely well in the hand. This is very important with any cutting or chopping tool that could be in your hand all day, either in use or just being carried – fatigue can easily lead to mistakes. Weight is a reasonable 19.4oz (550g).

This ‘Canopy’ version of the SOG Jungle Knife polished blade is made of a 4mm stock stainless steel (8Cr13MoV), hardened to 56-58 HRC, and has a utility shape – straight spine with a section of jimping at the base, a deep curve from the point and a long straight edge. In the other two versions of the SOG Jungle knife the blades are very different, with the ‘Primitive’ version having a black coated blade with a long section of saw-teeth on the spine and a short length of serrated blade near the handle, while the ‘Warrior’ model also has a black coating but is shaped with a long re-curve edge and ¾ false edge on the spine, giving it a much more aggressive military look.

Digi-Grip Comfort

The Canopy has a moulded Kraton synthetic handle for durability, with an ergonomic design and SOG’s Digi-Grip texturized finish which is makes it extremely comfortable to use. This isn’t just marketing talk – this is an exceptionally comfortable and grippy handle, and what is more, the size and pattern will suit most hand sizes, unlike some ergonomic shapes that would require a gorilla’s hand to hold them properly. As with overall weight and balance; the handle shape, size and texture are important when doing lots of work with a large bladed tool like this. The grip also features a moulded half-guard with two whipping holes, with a larger lanyard hole at the base (so easy to lash together a spear if need be). A sharply crenelated pommel strip at the base of the handle would make a good rasping tool, nut cracker, fishing priest or even a hammer (if you are careful).

Sheath Included

Included in the very reasonable price of £52.95 is a heavy duty black Nylon sheath that features deep (3”) belt loop, safety lining, a stud fastening security strap, lanyard hole and a decent sized utility pouch for carrying a large sharpening stone, a medium sized folding knife or multi-tool or any other small items – an adjustable Velcro fastening flap makes this a versatile addition to the sheath.

Conclusion

This knife is well up to any heavy duty cutting, clearing, slicing or chopping tasks encountered in camping, bushcraft or serious expeditions, and with the addition of a fixed ‘trout and bird’ knife or a medium folder or multi-tool (all depending on your application), you will be equipped to take on just about anything.
