Spyderco Manix2

Spyderco Manix2

Those who follow my scribblings will know that I like the bigger folders. A point in case is the Spyderco Military Model, I rate this as one of the truly great designs of all time and carry one for hunting and general use. However, when the smaller Para Military came out - and though in essence a scaled down version of the original - I did not like it. Undoubtedly a good design but miles away from the original concept in my opinion.

However, the subject of this test is the reverse, as what I have here is the Manix2, which as the name suggest is the next version of the original Manix folder. However, it was one of those designs I could not get on with it.

Mk 2

With the Manix2 Spyderco have down-sized and re-designed and the new, medium format is something I much prefer. If anything it puts me in mind of their Native folder, another model I like.

story continues below...

The build goes for a 3 3/8” spear point blade made of 154CM high carbon steel and is 3mm thick at its widest point. The 2 7/8” cutting edge is hollow ground and there’s a 14mm opening hole. Like the original there’s a low hump and below it a finger choil, both these areas show jimping for added grip.

Engagement is by a ball bearing lock set in a polymer cage for easy operation to the rear of the pivot. This slides forward along a shelf to give a secure lock up that is self adjusting for wear. The handle consists of an inner set of steel liners with checked, G10 scales. The shape cuts in behind the choil then flares out again to a lower hump then expands into the main body ending in a low stop.

More Subtle, More Useful

The re-designed and proportioned handle is more subtle than the original and allows easy edge up/down use. It also offers better address, plus the choil allows a choked-up hold for more precise work or if you want to apply more pressure to the cut. Spyderco have gone critical with added grip as there’s jimping top, bottom, and back. This really does make a difference in terms of security in all conditions.

Weighing in at 5oz with an open length of 8” and closed at 4 5/8”the Manix2 shows a large lanyard hole (pipe) and a reversible clothing clip that gives a sensible, point-up carry position.

There are three blade-type options all on the black grip frame – plain edge, combination edge (half scalloped and plain) and SpyderEdge (full scalloped). Overall this is a sweet medium folder that has benefited from the re-design and one I would be more than happy to carry in the field…
