Universal Hamster Foreand Extender

Universal Hamster Foreand Extender

As an enthusiastic competition shooter, I’ve long been aware of the benefits of various accessories, that can transform a gun, and a shooters performance. Hamsters are one such item that can have a dramatic effect, and the logic is simple. By significantly increasing the depth of the stock just forward of the trigger, the shooter is able to support the gun in a far less stressed way, and at the correct angle to the target. A more upright head position is afforded, with a far more composed, less hunched shot, the result. The gun is more pleasant to shoot, but importantly, this comfort leads to improved performance.

Standing shots in particular, benefit from this, yet the kneeling position and others, can be greatly improved, by effectively altering the stocks dimensions in this way. Of course, many full blown target rifles come ready fitted with deep boxy fore-ends for this very purpose - but they also happen to weigh a ton.

Airmasters Solutions

story continues below...

Airmasters, a specialist outfit with a reputation for top class engineering, have now devised the perfect solution, and their brand new Universal Hamster is designed as an aftermarket accessory to fit any rifle. Three options are available: black aluminium, silver finish, or machined black plastic; and all are beautifully made on state of the art CNC machinery. Visually, the Universal Hamster is an extremely satisfying piece of design. Hollowing out the inside of the body, and fine machining all those curves is a technical, time consuming process for sure; and an aspect reflected in the price of these mini masterpieces.

The Hamster is supplied as a kit, which includes the Hamster body, two pillars with screws, two pillar sleeves, two allen screws, and instructions.  On test here is the lower version, with 24mm high pillars, and an overall height that complies with HFT rulings. A higher version will also be available (with 38mm pillars and 16mm of adjustment possible) for Field Target shooting.

Fitting the Hamster, requires drilling into the underside of the rifle stock, screwing in the two pillars, and fitting the Hamster body into position. Clever design allows for the two pillars to be height adjusted, then locked into position, and that gloriously curved profile can of course be reversed if required, offering great versatility all round. Full instructions are supplied, and having seen the fitting process, I can certainly vouch for the simplicity of design, and the minimum of tools required. That said, if you just don’t feel confident, then any gunsmith should be happy to carry out the operation. Alternatively, Airmasters can offer a fitting service.

With the Hamster in place, fit and feel is just excellent, with the ultra-curved shape a delight. Adjustment is straightforward too, and with a great standard of engineering and finish this is clearly another product to satisfy the most demanding of shooters, from one of the most respected names in the business.
