VISM 1.1-4x24

VISM 1.1-4x24

If you shoot 22 semi-auto rifles like the SIG522 or S&W M&P 15-22 the trend in optics tends to go for a reasonably low powered unit. For this sort of use a variable makes a lot of sense too and what I have here would seem well suited to these guns and also more centrefire, Practical use too. Made by a company called VISM I was sent a 1.1-4x24 to look at.

There are two reticule options the P4 Sniper, which uses minute of angle (MOA) in a Mil-Dot style for range estimation and hold over. The other they call the Dot, which is essentially a German #4-type cross with a free central dot. Both are illuminated in blue and green, the P4 lights the centre cross and the Dot the middle dot. The rheostat is placed at 10 O’clock on the eyepiece bell.

CONFUSING CLICKS

Build quality looks good with a decent matt finish on the one-piece body tube, a set of see-through lens caps and a cloth are included and the scope comes in a padded/zipped case. The magnification ring is smooth and shows a raised lug to aid operation; not that it needs it. The rheostat is divided into 10 with 5-clicks in either direction giving levels of blue or green as selected, the battery is in the top cap (spare included).

Turrets are the lift to unlock type, so you can dial in fast corrections as required without worrying about things moving. You can also set a zero position by undoing an Allen screw and free rotating the drum to O. However, I was a little confused! According to the top of the turret click values are ¼ MOA, but the instructions indicate that the 1.1-4x24 offers ½-clicks.

story continues below...

Equally odd the drums, which offer 60-clicks per turn, are divided into 12 x 5-click increments, so regardless if it’s ¼ or 1/2 MOA you are either getting 1.25 or 2.5 MOA per sub division. Both being rather bastard sizes, I say this as most would assume that these divisions are 1 MOA as just about all other scopes of this type are! Testing showed that they were nearer to ½

TOO MUCH MAYBE?

Adjustment is generous as you get 30 MOA per turn and eight full turns at 240 MOA, which does seem rather a lot! For range work, I would go with the P4 reticule, as you can actor in drop and wind corrections by eye.

The reticule shows horizontal and vertical stadia (hash lines), information tells us that measuring from the centre cross the first is 2 MOA, then 3, 4 and 5. Given you know the height/width of your target you can range it as you would with Mil-Dot. VISM give this formula: divide target height or width in inches by same in MOA and multiply x 100. This is more sniper country and I would just convert all my drops into MOA and use it like a ladder reticule on know distances, as you would encounter on a range.

Optical quality appears good with crisp focusing and sight picture; chances are the scope is parallaxed at 100 yards, which is fine. Though not a fan of multi coloured illumination both the blue and green worked well. Eye relief was generous and the field of view (FOV) at 100 yards is near 100 feet (@ x1.1). Like I said this spec and size is the perfect compliment certainly for a 22 semi-auto or an AR15 in 223 Rem, though some might think the magnification a bit low for longer distances.

I tried the VISM 1.1-4x24 on both my S&W 15-22 rimfire semi and Ruger Mini 14 straight-pull in 223 Rem and had no complaints. Click value confusion aside, which is just a matter of shooting it to find out if it ¼ or ½, this is a good little scope and something that would sit very well on most guns of this type, though I would choose the P4 ret and not the Dot! VISM offers a ‘life of the product’ warranty, for however long that is, but it’s only valid in the USA…
