Weaver

I suppose the best way to describe the Weaver V-24 is as an old-school varmint scope, as it has an adjustable objective (AO) for target focusing, a lock ring type focus, capped turrets and a 1” body tube. Though perhaps envisioned as a firearms scope, for me it would be used on an FAC-rated air rifle or a rimfire for precision pest control. It’s made from aircraft grade aluminium with a matt black finish and shows a one-piece construction and Japanese-made multi-coated lenses.

The adjustable objective is marked 50ft, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75, 100, 200 and 400-yards and then ?. It operates smoothly and allows you to get your target in crisp focus and to a degree gives an indication of range, though this would need to be tested in the field to see what lines up with what, but it operates smoothly.

Turrets are easily dialable but under screw-off caps, so dialling in the field might not be a serious option. Click values are 1/8 MOA @ 100-yards and offer 48-clicks per turn (6”) and six full turns (36”) in both elevation and windage. Not a massive amount of turret adjustment I think you will agree?

The fixed section of the turret shows seven vertical stadia, to give an indication of turret movement when dialling in. Once you have zeroed it’s easy enough to set ZERO by unscrewing the raised, central lug on top of the drum, once removed the drum can be lifted up and repositioned to 0.

The reticule is in the 2nd focal plane and the V-24 offers a choice of seven different reticules as follows: Mil-Dot, Fine Crosshair, Dual-X, Fine Crosshair with ¼ MOA centre dot, Varminter, Ballistic-X or as per scope on test their own .223 Ballistic–X

Reticle. This consists of thick to thin posts that intersect at a largish dot with aim off ‘windage dots at either side. On the lower fine post are 3 more dots. Weavers states it’s set for a 55-grain .223 Remington round. If sighted in at 200-yd a shot at 300 will correspond with the next dot down and so on.  I’m interested in it as a FAC air rifle scope or for use with a 17HMR. Only five of the series have adjustable objectives, so these will be of most interest to the airgunner as they focus down to approximately 12-yds.

CONCLUSIONS

There’s no shadow of a doubt that the Weaver Classic V™ Series 6 – 24 X 42AO V-24 scope is a good optic! Clarity of the Japanese lenses is superb as is the overall build and finish. Though relatively lengthy it wasn’t detrimental to the overall handling of any rifle I used it on, another plus is the lengthy eye-relief meaning you’re not wasting valuable time adjusting your head position to get a full sight picture.
