Woolpower Clothing
Woolpower (formerly known as Ullfrotte) make their woollen thermal clothing in Northern Sweden – a place where having good warm clothing can be the difference between life and death!
I have been trying out their “Crewneck 200” Baselayer top, which is made from a fairly loose knit mix of 60% Merino Wool, 25% Polyester, 13% Polyamide and 2% Elastane, and has a terry loop inside surface. This gives superb insulation and, combined with the low number of seams in the circle knit fabric, extra long back and double thickness cuffs, superb comfort as well. At no time when wearing this top did I experience any itching or discomfort, so forget the idea of “itchy wool undies”!
The material is hard wearing, lightweight, can be washed at 60 degree C, is naturally odour resistant (I wore mine for a week without getting pongy), is flame resistant, naturally wicking and will help keep you warm even when wet.
Available in sizes XS-XXXL in Black, Grey, Blue and Green, the Crewneck 200 costs around £44.
Woolpower make more than just baselayers and I can also recommend their Full Zip Jacket 400 in 400gm2 fabric as an ideal midlayer garment over the Crewneck 200. If further proof were needed, I understand that French and some Scandinavian military units wear and swear by Woolpower clothing.
