Boker Plus Subcom

Boker Plus Subcom

Proving that good things certainly can come in small packages, the Böker Plus Subcom Rescue knife is one of the handiest little tools that we’ve come across, and, in my humble opinion, should be considered for standard issue to all members of the emergency services. Based on the highly successful Böker Plus Subcom mini-folder design, what sets this knife apart is the line cutter hook combined with a recessed serrated blade that will slice through rope, canvas webbing, etc. yet can safely be used close to the body – such as when cutting a seat belt or other harness.

The 1.75” blade is made from AUS 8 stainless steel and has a small ridged thumb stud on each side for easy ambidextrous opening. The blade is held open with a liner locking mechanism, and the steel handle frame has a G10 grip scale on one side with a sprung stainless steel pocket clip on the reverse. The clip allows carriage on a pocket, belt or ‘bill-fold’, while a hole through the grip gives further carrying options – on key-fob, neck chain or lanyard. Although the G10 is only on one side of the handle, grooves on three sides (including the blade spine) ensures that a good grip can be maintained, especially for close-up and complex cutting tasks.

This Subcom Rescue knife is compact but easy to handle and genuinely useful. The manufacturer claims that they ‘perform way out of their size range’ and we have to agree with them. It is unfortunate that British law doesn’t allow the public carrying of ‘locking’ blades of any kind, as this little tool is one of the least ‘aggressive’ designs that I’ve ever come across, yet it could help save a life in an emergency situation.

The Böker Plus brand

Böker Plus is a relatively new range of knives from the world famous Böker cutlery company, but built in the Far East instead of Solingen, Germany (or their equally famous Argentinian facility). Amongst the models in this range are the Action 2, Trance, Armed Forces Tanto Folders, the Reality Based series and Subcom series. The Subcom and Trance series are designed by Chad Los Banos on the island of Hilo, Hawaii. These knives appear to be well made, using quality materials, yet in some cases are substantially lower in price than other Böker models.
