Buck Budgie Knife

Buck Budgie Knife

Buck Knives have really upped the ante as they’re releasing many new top-quality blades, fixed and folders. In the latter category, we now have the choice of the rather strangely named, Buck Budgie. Not only does it stand out by name but in design as well.

The steel

Measuring 3.25” in the closed position and weighing a mere 2.1oz, the Budgie holds a 2”, S35VN stainless-steel drop-point blade. Even the design of the blade is quite unique for a folder of this size, as it’s very strong and has a deep profile. Also, the grade of the stainless steel blade ensures maximum edge retention and makes sharpening easier.

It’s easily deployed from the handle one-handedly using the large, elongated thumb hole. When in use, it is secured in the open position by a strong lock liner mechanism. A nice touch is the operational side of the liner has a selection of raised dimples of various sizes to aid with thumb contact.

On one side only

A tough, black G10 handle plate is neatly secured on one side of the knife. This is a bonus as G10 is a high-pressure fibreglass laminate, which is a type of lightweight composite material. It’s highly durable, so it can withstand heavy use in both wet and dry conditions. Another key feature of this handle plate is that it’s finely textured to offer a high level of grip.

Carry options

The Budgie doesn’t come with a standard belt pouch and belt loop but does offer two alternative carrying options. One is a strong stainless-steel pocket/belt clip on the opposite side of the frame, while the other carrying option extends from the very rear. Here, a red synthetic buffer has been installed and recessed into the back of the handle in order to prevent overtravel when closing the knife, plus it also serves to protect the point of the blade. This is a design feature seen on other Buck Knives but on the Budgie, they’ve cleverly extended it beyond the rear of the handle frame where it forms an elongated, oblong skeletonised section that can be used as an attachment point for a small carabiner or lanyard.

Conclusions

The Buck Budgie is a superb blade for skinning and gutting small game, plus it is useful for a host of other in-field tasks. For such a small knife, the handle feels very comfortable in the hold and secure in use. It’s made in the USA and carries the Buck Forever Warranty. It also comes with a soft, black nylon drawcord fastened pouch and is supplied in an attractive presentation case.
