Leatherman Super Tool 300

Leatherman Super Tool 300

For reviewers such as myself who regularly get to test kit – specifically knives or, in this case, multi-tools – I think it’d be true to say the major manufacturers of these ‘tools’ have got every base covered. However, in some instances if a manufacturer (as can also happen with other types of accessories) notices this type of product on their roster would benefit having a few modifications and upgrades, then a revamp is certainly worth their effort and in most cases becomes of more interest to ‘us’ the end consumer.

A long-winded introduction to a gear test you may feel, but in relation to the Leatherman Super Tool 300 I feel necessary, as a very similar ‘named’ multi-tool was previously a stalwart model of the company roster for many years. If my memory serves me correctly, the model of tool the ‘new look’ Super Tool 300 was based on was quite a bulky, un-wieldy beastie. However, the base design and tools it held made it a sturdy workhorse, but being so packed with features not the most ergonomic or easiest of tools to use. However, that’s all changed for the better, so time to check over the latest incarnation of the 300.

This all-stainless steel build butterfly opening multi-tool weighs a wholesome 9.6oz and measures 4.5 inches in the closed position and seven inches with the pliers deployed. Also both knife blades are manufactured from 420HC stainless steel.

All extensional tools such as the blades are held on the inside of the handles, meaning you have to open the 300 to access them, but no hardship, as once a tool is deployed you close the tool back up and such is the build you have a very chunky pair of handles to hold.

Also, a point worthy of note is that while using the pliers, due to the top handle having a sloped design, you can manoeuvre them further into tight spaces. Talking of which, in plier mode, you have needle nose and regular pliers, hard wire cutters, electrical crimper and stranded wire stripper. In fact, it actually boasts the largest and strongest plier heads than any other model of Leatherman.

And There’s More!

The other tools it features are a 3.2 inch fine edge clip point knife blade, wood/ metal file, small (1/8 inch), medium (5/16 inch) and large (7/32 inch) slot head screwdrivers, medium size Phillips head screwdriver, can opener, bottle opener, large awl (with thread loop), wood saw, 3.2 inch aggressive serrated knife blade and a lanyard hole attachment point.

Granted, to those who prefer a more lightweight and compact ‘multi’, then the Super Tool 300 may at first seem overly rugged. Not so, as this type of tool is specifically built for hard use, and if that means sacrificing a degree of cosmetic appeal, then I for one applaud the fact that Leatherman haven’t been afraid to go back to basics and the old style of down to earth practical fully featured and built like a tank of ‘tool’ design.

As you’d expect, it carries the Leatherman 25 year warranty and comes with a black ballistic Nylon belt pouch
