Mil-Tec Tactical Side Zip Boots are available in brown, khaki, urban grey and black, offering a tough day-to-day option that is easy to step in and out of. The Cordura design allows the foot to breathe, reducing sweat problems whilst still offering a barrier against water ingress. Whether for Hunting, Airsoft or simply casual wear, the polyester laces allow regular on-off performance with the four top pairs of speedlace eyelets allowing free flowing tension to be laced and drawn in quickly to your desired tension within the 7-inch high boot.
The alternative is to peel open the inside Velcro strap to reveal a sturdy YKK zip that opens 6½-inches of the inner wall of the boot, down to the EVA insole allowing speedy removal and re-fit when needed. Thinsulate™ Insulation allows your feet to stay cool in warmer conditions but warmer in colder months without excessive weight or bulk. My size (11/45) boots weighed 1544g for the pair, so not too tiring considering the support and protection offered. If water does eventually soak through, Thinsulate only retains 1% of its mass in water while remaining warm, a bit like a wetsuit.
External protection is given by the rand rising to half the height of your toes surrounding the suede leather and 1200D Cordura fabric, whose panels have been well-profiled with flat seams to avoid rubbing on the outside/underside of the ankles, a factor I often encounter in softer more flexible boots of this type. It’s also good to note that the flexible suede leather has not even hinted it might separate from the rand at either side of the boot in line with the ball of your foot where it flexes most, and here is where most boots often initiate their first failings. The reinforced toe fends off rocks and brambles have yet to snag or tear at the fabric whose padded tongue uniformly spreads the load of lace tension.
Lastly, the 7-inch height with a padded, but not excessively bulky, cuff onto your calf is really comfortable, giving just enough ankle support to protect you without the stiffness that makes driving in a high boot less delicate. Although I wasn’t using these in muddy conditions, they have certainly shed dirt quite well with the flexible sole shedding mud quickly. They have been great boots to wear in the last few months when wellies have been the main option for deep mud and plenty of water soaked ground. I really appreciated the side zip for easy on and off when swapping back and forth through the day.
