Foxy Tales

You’ll be giving your age away if you can remember Fjall Raven clothing the first time around, the famous curled up peeping fox logo once a common sight. Built as Fjall Raven say and part of their ‘Forest Collection’, the Brenner suit and Karbulle shirt combine hardcore Swedish durability, a combination of modern and traditional fabrics and good old fashioned toughness and durability. Manufactured with the great outdoors in mind, Fjall Raven hunter’s clothing has been developed over the years in conjunction with hands on practical experience, to produce clothing that not only looks good but actually works.

Brenner Jacket & Trousers

Going back to basics in many ways, the Brenner jacket and trousers are constructed from G – 1000, a new fabric reserved for their classic range of clothing. This densely woven fabric consists of 65% polyester and 35% cotton which means the Brenner outfit is extremely hardwearing and, courtesy of the Hydratic lining is as near impervious to wind and rain as you’re likely to find. The Greenland Wax impregnated material wicks away moisture, offers excellent UV protection and is an excellent protection against mosquitoes (these winged irritants starting to become a serious consideration) and above all it still remains silent.

The jacket offers several large pockets including front cartridge accommodating bellows, a stretched cuff for keeping the sleeves in place and keeping out the cold, and a high warm collar. In addition the sleeveless fleece lining zips out to become a useful and practical garment in its own right and can be reattached in a matter of moments to increase the jacket’s warming properties when the temperatures really bite.

Made from the same G – 1000 material, the Brenner trousers utilise the jacket’s identical properties even down to the seven pocket system including those for torches, knives and other hunting essentials plus full ankle adjustability. Double – skinned and reinforced around the legs, knees and around the backside, when worn in conjunction with the jacket the two separate items combine together to form one impermeable outfit that easily combats the most unfriendly conditions whilst remaining fully wearer friendly at all times.

The Brenner jacket is priced at £290 while the Trousers are £150.

Karbulle Shirt

The Karbulle shirt is designed to perform as well as it looks and combines 45% acrylic, 35% polyester and 25% pure wool, plus G – 1000 reinforcement across the shoulders, breast pocket flaps and sleeves. Soft browns and caramels merge together to produce a soft, warm check shirt that’ll soak up any and all abuse you care to throw at it. As an overshirt, wear alone in warmer weather or as one of the layers beneath the Brenner jacket when the weather gets cold, the Karbulle does it all. Generously cut with two voluminous breast pockets, double-button cuffs, the G – 1000 protection and fabric mixture ensures the Karbulle will last for years whilst still looking smart although its ability to blend in with its surrounds when needed is excellent, whilst it still looks like new after numerous washes. And for those who can’t bear to be parted from their Karbulle, two alternative colour schemes are also available.
The Karbulle shirt is priced at £90.

Four on the Floor

The beauty of the Brenner/Karbulle combination is that for a total outlay of £530 you’re getting yourself an outfit that you can wear all year round, adding or subtracting the various layers as temperatures and conditions dictated; my favourite amalgamation being the trousers, shirt and superbly comfortable zip-out sleeveless fleece. And believe me when I say I’ve worn the complete outfit for stalking, high-seat work, duck shooting, early and late season walked-up, driven shooting and general out and about work on board a quad and this hard wearing Fjall Raven kit still looks like new whilst keeping me warm and dry, no matter how foul or inhospitable the weather. Likewise, whilst most modern fabrics, be they manmade or natural, would have succumbed to numerous encounters with barbwire and other jagged surfaces, the G – 1000 material just shrugs them off.
