The M&P is a little different as it’s all polymer construction. The lower has the buffer tube moulded-in and the upper is combined with the Picatinny, 4-way, free-float forend, making it light at just 5lbs empty. All controls function with working automatic and manual hold open systems, there’s even a functioning case deflector as the 15-22 has a 22 Long Rifle sized ejection port.
The trigger is pure AR so you can retro-fit components if you wish and operation is by a rear-mounted T-handle. The medium-weight barrel is 16” with a flash hider threaded ½ x28” UNEF. Feed is from dedicated 10 and 25-shot mags with external lugs to make filling easier and an orange, hi-vis follower. The empty free-falls from the well at the touch of the release button. If you are looking for a rimfire trainer to practice M16 drills this is it!
The rifle strips the same as the M16 with push pins holding the upper and lower receivers together and the bolt pulls out, so cleaning is easy too. Though identical in layout and operation there are two versions - the standard M&P15-22 and the MOE (Magpul Original Equipment) version. The former shows the old Rock River butt and detachable M16-type sights and A2 pistol grip. The Latter has Magpul butt, pistol grip and their MBUS, fold-down iron sights. A 25-shot magazine is included with either model.
For: True M16 controls and functions
Against: Polymer body might not suit everyone
Verdict: Well priced, comprehensive and effective product
S&W M&P 15-22 MOE £699.99
10 and 25 round mags £29.99 each
