Duek defense rapid transition sights

I’ve recently built myself a new training rifle based on the excellent KWA/ PTS RM4 Electronic Recoil Gun (ERG); the RM4 has all the functionality of a real AR/M4 with 30 round magazines, last round cut-off, a functioning bolt release, and simulated recoil similar to that you’d find from a .22LR rifle so it’s the perfect training tool.

I wanted to set it up to use more as a Practical Shooting rifle rather than an airsoft skirmish gun so decided to run it with a 4x32 magnified optic. This solved the mid- to long-range targets, but I needed something to use for the close range stuff. Normally I use Aimpoint T1 red dots with co-witnessed flip-up backup iron sights, but with the magnified optic this just wasn’t working so I delved into possible solutions online.

After a bit of trawling I arrived at the website of Dueck Defense, and am I glad I did! Barry Dueck is a Marine Corps veteran and Champion 3-gun shooter, founder and director of the SureFire Suppressor Division & Dueck Defense. Barry’s life is all about shooting and making the best accessories to improve firearm performance; his Rapid Transition Sights (RTS) show that this man seriously knows his business!
Set sights

The RTSs are permanently mounted at a 45 degree offset to allow an instantaneous shift from primary optic to backup sights simply by tilting the rifle. The rear sight mounts onto the receiver rail, with the front placed on the handguard top rail. They can be installed on the left or right side of the receiver and eliminate the need to cowitness backup sights through your optic completely. They provides the same bore height and sight picture as standard A2 sights. The rear sight has flip-up long- and short-range apertures, and is adjustable for windage and elevation in ½ MOA clicks.

A locking bar and cross-bolt attachment system clamps the sights securely to any MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail, and they sit only .20 inches above the rail, so there’s no interference with the main sighting system. For more tactical applications the front sight base won’t interfere with the beam path of military IR laser/illuminators.

Fitting the RTSs requires no special tools, as they are secured quickly and easily using just a simple flat head screwdriver. They can be positioned on either side of the rifle for right- or left-handed shooters so they are extremely versatile; as a ‘righty’ the instructions that came with the sights suggested that I mount them on the right-hand side of my ERG, but after a few sessions on the range I ended up changing them to the left as I found the tilt transition more comfortable this way. My advice is to play around with them and find what suits you the best.

Price Is Right

Now a real set of RTSs will set you back iro US $240 and, of course, importation may see you get clobbered with duty on top of that. Luckily there is a licenced replica of the sights available and a quick ask around led me to Pro Airsoft Supplies who are able to special order the replica with full trademarks for just £24.99!

If you’re running a magnified optic and require backup sights then the licenced Dueck Defense Rapid Transition Sights are really, really worth a look; as Barry Dueck himself states: “No-one else builds exactly what I needed, and I knew I could build it the best.”

You know what? I think he is absolutely right!
