Panzer Operations

Panzer Operations

story continues below...

Herman Hoth was the commander of the German 3rd Panzer Group during Operation Barbarossa in June 1941. As such he led his men into Russia and on towards Moscow. First published in 1956, it was written when events were still fresh in his mind. Because of this it makes for a fascinating insight into his opinions of operations. He mentions his concerns about supplies, especially fuel, moving deep into Russia and the effectiveness of his men. He tells how Russian resistance could be very light at times and on other occasions be very fierce. His comments about Russian soldiers are also very interesting as he writes in a reflective vein looking back on the war years. He also reflects on the preparations for Barbarossa and debates what went wrong and how things could have been differently. An unusual book on a campaign wellcovered and well worth a read.
