The Royal British Legion; 90 Years of Heroes Book

By: Pat Farey

We each buy our 'Poppy' every year but how many people today give any thought to the significance and how the symbol came about?

This book written by a young Royal Marine Commando who was awarded the George Cross for his actions in Afghanistan serves to remind us all of the debt we owe to our brave servicemen and women, especially this year which marks the 90th anniversary of RBL and the Poppy. It must have been difficult to single out individuals from each of the nine decades covered in the book, but he has achieved it impartially and presents a work that reads like a roll of honour, which in effect is what it is.

The RBL is in danger of being overshadowed by other more recently established charities but this was the first permanent charity for service personnel and reading it makes one feel very humble. The RBL has around 350,000 members but sadly they are only noticed on Remembrance Sunday as they stand by the war memorials across the country. They deserve better and we can give it to them by buying this book which supports the RBL.
