Retreat & Rearguard Dunkirk 1940

Retreat & Rearguard Dunkirk 1940

story continues below...

There have been many books written about the Dunkirk campaign, some good and some bad.

It is a relief to say this falls into the former category and is one of the good works on the subject. He treats the subject with respect and steers away from the melodramatic, keeping very firmly on the facts, which is supported with first-hand accounts. He builds on this information, which is fascinating and whilst some of the stories may be familiar, they are freshly presented and in a way which makes the reader think. The role of the Royal Engineers in destroying bridges after the Allies had retreated is covered and some interesting accounts emerge. The maps used are basic, but this is not a criticism, because the very basicness of them means they can be used easily to help when visiting the battleground.
