The British army’s current involvement in Afghanistan is not the first time it has been operational in that country.
As the title of this book reminds us, it was in 1839 that the British army first fought in the country, which makes this latest deployment the fourth time that British soldiers have served there. This war is one of those Victorian-era campaigns, which is largely forgotten, having been over-shadowed by other wars of the period. The author covers all the hows and whats and whys, which led to the war, along with the who’s who in leading figures. The what and where of the war is very clear. The text explains everything from the beginning to the outcome and what it meant for Britain and its possession of India. Many of the place names will be familiar but it must be remembered this was 19th Century warfare. An excellent general read and of great use to war gamers and modellers, who will find much in this book to inspire them.
