Bushnell Legend 8x42 Ultra HD binos

The latest Bushnell Legend 8x42 Ultra HD Binoculars really caught my eye as they won the ‘Best New Binocular Award’ at the 2015 Time Inc Shooting Industry Awards; so they already come highly recommended! You get a lot for the money too: a hard case with carry strap, a choice of two padded neck straps and an additional mini harness. Add to this a small bag for protection and front and rear lens covers – the objective ones being attached, pull-down types.

LENS SPEC

Bushnell states their aim as ‘the ultimate in detailed resolution and colour fidelity’, and for that, they incorporate several technical processes. ED Prime Extra-low Dispersion fluorite glass is used, and this is accredited with the fine colour resolution and contrast. It should eliminate chromatic aberration and colour fringing. Enhanced performance in low light conditions is another big bonus.

Ultra Wide Band Coating is an anti-reflection process which is apparently customized for every lens element in the optical path. This maximizes the amount of light that enters from the front then back to the eyepiece. Optimum brightness and true colours is the stated aim.

Bushnell uses their Rainguard HD lens treatment, which offers a permanent hydrophobic waterrepellent coating to prevent fogging in poor conditions. It works by effectively forcing moisture to form in smaller droplets- with a clearer, brighter image the result.

SALES BLURB APART?

These Legends offer a lighter tougher body than previous models, by adding a magnesium chassis, and ‘soft touch’ rubber armoured grip, handling is spot-on. I’ve got quite large hands, but everything felt right for me! The usual individual leading eye, +/- dioptre features on the right tube, and is used to set up for your eye. Typically there are twist-up eye cups to suit all users to further refine the view. I set my ‘interpupillary’ distance and really started appreciating One observation, the minimum focus is as close as two yards. Incredible contrast, brightness, and fine resolution in a variety of conditions, was a pleasing assessment. Add to that a slick, central focus dial, and the light weight and it’s difficult not to be impressed by performance overall. Bushnell includes a tripod adaptor that attaches to the forward hung point; very useful for observation!
