Nitrex TR ONE 3-10x50

Nitrex TR ONE 3-10x50

Does the name Weaver ring a bell with you? Chances are it does, as they are one of the great names in US optics. Perhaps eclipsed a little by more modern brands these days, but none the less a solid product that has serviced American and shooters across the world for a very long time. However having more than one string to your bow is never a bad idea and Weaver adhere to that policy with a brand they call Nitrex.

TR One or Two?

There are two groups TR One and TR Two, that offers basic and more hi-tech approaches, with the former being the most basic in terms of extra features, which is fine for the serious hunter with fully, multi-coated lenses. The latter offers the same optical quality but adds on the features such as lift to unlock turrets, side focus and greater reticule and magnification range choices and illumination. Weaver has this to say about them: “It’s where the Nitrex™ Optics brand all began. This core group of riflescopes covers a broad range of shooting needs. Each clearly shows our commitment to no-frills, stripped down optics perfection at an affordable price.”

Unsurprisingly they are made in Japan, which these days is no stigma at all. The test scope was a 3-10x50, which I also used on the 17HMR, CZ 452 Thumbhole Varmint Carbine I am also looking at this month. From varmints to deer this is a usable spec with enough top end mag for longer shots, a decent sized objective to let in the light and a lower setting that will allow close range work. The build is plain and simple with a one-piece, 1” body tube and fast focus eyepiece. You have the choice of matt or gloss black finish; personally I prefer the former due to the reduced reflection potential.

Simple In Second

The reticule, which is set in the 2nd focal plane, is what Nitrex calls a TrexPlex™ for that read a fine/medium dual-x design, which is typically American and totally familiar and eminently useable for the British shooter too. Turrets are medium-height, hunter-types under removable caps. Inside is a raised bar which makes operation easy. Click values are ¼” @ 100-yards with 48-clicks (12”) per rotation and five full turns (60”) in elevation and windage. Again nothing fancy but a solid and practical adjustment system for what is a zero and forget scope with all the range correction made through the reticule.

Lens quality is good with a clear sight picture, no peripheral aberration and a pretty good colour balance. Low light operation is effective and will serve well until you can’t see the target to sensibly and safely shoot at. This is far from an exciting scope with no whistles and bells but a tough and no nonsense build that does what it says on the tin and will put the meat on the table! Though it does seem rather expensive for what it is!

PRICE: £538

FOR - Solid and dependable build
AGAINST - Quite expensive by comparison
VERDICT - It will get the job done
