Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil

story continues below...

› Modern gunstocks are available in a wide variety of mediums, with the highly technical laminate winning over an army of fans for the stability and warp-free properties that it brings to the table. With coloured layers creating eye-catching visuals as the blank is cut to spec, they offer a different look for sure, along with a thick, durable glossy varnish that means they tend to be maintenance-free going forwards.
For many of us, however, nothing quite compares to the look of finely figured walnut, and maintaining this is a wholly different ball game. Walnut, and wood in general, needs feeding for protection and looks, and there is one name that certainly needs no introduction where gunstock finishing is concerned, and that’s Birchwood Casey. This American brand is well respected, and its Tru-Oil is available in three bottle sizes, to suit the size of the project. It’s a blend of linseed and natural oils and is designed not to yellow or crack with age. The guidelines state that each coat should be given a minimum of two hours to touch dry, and then it can be finely buffed with 00-grade steel wool. Further coats can be applied in the same manner, until the level of sheen desired is achieved.
Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil and many other stock finishing products are available through Birchwood Casey’s main UK distributor – Hannam’s Reloading.
