Over the years tactical-type rifle/sniper bags have become more popular and are available from many companies. A relatively new name in this area is DEFCON 5 which is an Italian company who make camo clothing and also offer a sniper drag bag.
In essence a drag bag is just about the toughest, non-rigid piece of gun luggage available. It’s designed to be backpacked into position and can protect its contents even if it’s dragged over the ground. This is a tactic that snipers might employ on the final stage of their stalk - literally crawling forward with the bag towed behind. Maybe a bit over the top for sports shooters, but none the less; the advantages of a strong and practical build combined with good external stowage stands true.
The DEFCON bag is made of a heavy duty Cordura Nylon and consists of five main sections. The main body measures 50 x 12” internally so lots of room for a scoped rifle with moderator and bipod etc. Protection comes from integral, semi-rigid panels and an under- seam on the rim serves to keep the weather out! Inside are two QD load straps with a cleaning rod slot in the lower spine and a 13 x 4” pouch for small items like clearing kit with press stud/flap closure. There’s a full-length double-ended zip with a press studded outer cover to further keep things snug. All zips used have extended pulls with plastic tags.
On the outside are twin pouches measuring 24 x 30 and 24 x 58 cms, both being 5cms deep. Closure is by the same zip system as the main, the smaller, rear pocket has extra stowage in the form of a diagonal zipped pocket on the outside. Both have securing straps within. These are big and easily swallowed a spotting scope, folding tripod shooting rest and ammo etc. Up front is what’s called a drag hood, this cone-shaped cap stops the ingress of debris when being dragged.
Carriage consists of wrap-around handle loops with Velcro connector and on the rear is a concealed back pack harness. This sits under a flap with Velcro closures at each end and on one side. The harness is fully padded, adjustable and features a sternum strap and can be removed if not required.
I have been using this bag for a few months now and can’t really find any fault with it. It’s large enough to swallow even a long barrelled rifle with big NV scope on top and with the harness deployed offers an easy carry if you for example you have to hump the gun a long way. The bag comes in three colour options – Black D5-SBO1 B, Olive Green D5-SBO1 OG and Vegitato Italiano camo D5-SBO1 VI.
