Napier Stock Shield

Napier Stock Shield

Take a traditionally finished gun stock out into the rain and you often get rain spots on the surface that can be hard to remove.

I’ve had some of my guns come home looking rather sorry for themselves after a trip out in lousy weather and it has taken a while to get them looking good again. Napier Of London already make a very comprehensive ‘London Gun Stock’ finishing kit and their new product ‘Stock Shield’ looks like it’ll be a winner too.

Special Blend

story continues below...

The idea was to produce a product that could be used to quickly protect and enhance a stock in only a few minutes. This might sound like a tall order, as re-finishing a stock can be a lengthy and time-consuming process. Napier’s Stock Shield takes only a couple of minutes! The special blend of oils contains no waxes or silicones, so it will allow the stock wood to ‘breath’ and not block the pores. The 75ml bottle looks like the sort of applicator that some shoe care products come in and it’s a hand-sized, squeezable bottle with a sponge applicator at the top. The stock is laid down and the sponge placed on the wood; a few gentle squeezes allow some of the product to impregnate the sponge and allow it to be spread. You don’t actually need very much at all, as it spreads well and soon coats the woodwork. I simply laid the shotgun stock on the table and protected the surface with a bin liner. It only takes a minute or two for the Stock Shield to work its magic and a quick buff with a lint-free cloth had it gleaming! As you can see from the before and after photographs, it’s an impressive product and really does what the makers claim. Raindrops left no marks at all and I can see me treating all of my wooden stocks with this impressive product.

Napier say that you can use the product before and after exposure to rain and I’m very impressed with the way rainwater just runs off the surface of the stock without leaving any marks. If you do get any marks on the woodwork from clumsy handling, a quick once over with Stock Shield should sort it out in no time. What’s even more impressive is the fact that a bottle only costs £9.95 and as I said, it will last for ages.

Conclusion

Napier certainly know how to develop a great product and I can see Stock Shield selling very well indeed, to owners of shotguns, rifles and air rifles.
