I-hunt game caller Kranks

New to electronic animal calls is Ruger’s iHUNT. It consists of a free- standing speaker unit that wirelessly links to your mobile phone via its Bluetooth connection. Once you download the app, the iHUNT is controlled through your phone. It runs on 4 x C-cell batteries and features a hinged, horseshoe carry handle/base with extendable hanging hook. There’s only one control, the rubber-covered ON/OFF button when active a red light come on.

iHUNT quote an operating range of 0-100 yards so it could be placed on the bonnet of your truck, hung in a tree or placed down range. You have to be aware of the red light, which could cause a fox to bolt. OK good for recovering it at night but better to put some tape over it!

The speaker can generate up to 115 Db of output and offers a massive 600 sounds taken from 47 animal and bird species. With updates being available for extra calls and bug fixes etc; I have received two so far! The list of species is mind-numbing: ALLIGATORS & CROCODILES, BEARS, BIRDS, BOBCATS, BUFFALO & BISON, CHICKENS, CHIPMUNKS, COWS, COYOTES, CROWS & RAVENS, DEER, DONKEYS, DUCKS, ELK, FOXES, GEESE, GOATS, HAWKS & EAGLES, JACKAL, MICE & RATS, MOOSE. OWLS, PHEASENT, PRAIRIE DOGS, QUAIL, RABBIT & HARE, RACCOONS, SHEEP & LAMB, SNIPE BIRDS, SQUIRRELS, WILD BOAR & PIGS, WILDEBEEST, ZEBRA. Now that’s a lot of fur, feather & scale!

 

NO BIRDS PLEASE

OK I accept that not all live in the UK and should also remind you that it’s illegal to use any electronic call to call any bird species for whatever purpose. However, and given our main quarry is Mr Fox; variety is the spice of life so you can use even bird calls as they are very inquisitive so something new as bizarre as it might sound to us could just do the trick. The general quality of the calls is good across the species in the deer list there’re a number of fawn in distress calls and it will be interesting to see if that works on the does!

It’s also possible to produce a specific play list to suit the species you are after. But iHUNT does not stop there as it features the following sections: solunar times (phase of the moon, sun rise/etc) an activity log, local weather, a photo album, compass and flashlight. Plus Ruger have put in a Shop Ruger app along with details of the firearms; all very clever!
