The Jack Pyke Canvas Day Pack has a very traditional look, with a heavy cotton canvas shell and buckle fastenings, with leather straps on all compartments. However, it is still very practical and functional.

Keep it simple

The large main compartment has a drawstring beneath a large flap, with a buckle fastening, so the contents are well protected. Inside, there is one large open space without any side pockets. A medium-sized, squared-off pocket on the front of the pack is ideal for holding binoculars, so they can be quickly and easily accessed. There are also two smaller pockets on the sides of the pack, which will hold water bottles or other items. This very simple design allows you to carry the stuff you need to get at quickly in the outer pockets and to keep your larger items, like clothing or food, in the main compartment.

The shoulder straps are also a simple, uncluttered design. As well as the back of the pack, they are nicely padded for a comfortable carry. In use, the main compartment holds a lot of gear, and the opening is wide enough to be able to get items in and out unrestricted. The binocular compartment on the front is very handy, and the buckle fastener ensures the contents are held securely.

Despite being plain and simple, the straps are surprisingly comfortable and the pack sits well on your back without the need for any additional straps. The flat-bottomed design ensures that the bag stays upright when you put it on the ground (if properly packed), and this makes accessing the contents far easier.

The canvas outer is lined with a synthetic material, providing additional protection to the contents, and the straps on the fasteners are wide and made of good-quality leather. There is also a neat leather trim to the edges of the pocket flaps, making them far more durable, plus they give the pack a very smart, classic look. The build quality is very good and the tough materials used are built to last. The buckles are all made of metal, and they have a loop, also in metal, to give additional security and to hold the end of the strap down flat.

Verdict

At just 17”x12”x16”, this day pack is a good size, and although it is not made of modern lightweight materials, it still only tips the scales at 700-grams. The simple design is very practical and it will suit anyone who does not like countless pockets, spaces, and attachment points. It is available in brown, green, and fawn, with all three options showing a brown leather trim, plus straps. It is extremely well priced at just over £30.00.
