Stay safe this season with new BASC films

  • BASC is launching a series of short shotgun safety films ahead of the start of the lowland game season.

  • The six shareable videos cover key aspects of shotgun safety in line with BASC's best practice advice.

  • Inspecting a shotgun, Shotgun slip procedure, Preparing to shoot, Handling a misfire, Crossing an obstacle alone, Crossing an obstacle in company.

  • The films, hosted on BASC’s YouTube Channel (youtube.com/bascfilms), support BASC's shotgun Safe Shot Award.

  • Tom O'Carroll, BASC's video producer, said: "It can be surprising what questions crop up when looking at the details of shotgun safety. Exactly what stage of shooting should you disengage the safety catch? How can removing a shotgun from a slip bring you respect or make those around you feel safe? What should you look for to check if a gun is safe to use?

  • “In these films, we show things being done right and point out what makes it right.

  • “Tutorial videos should be easy to follow and easy to watch. These films were designed to be as direct as possible, avoiding the waffle and only presenting what’s important.

  • “They are also in a format that can be watched and shared easily on social media.”

  • Sally-Anne Cockerill, a member of BASC council, said: "Tom and his team have done a brilliant job creating these short, easy-to-watch videos.

  • “I would urge anyone going into the field this season - be it as a gun, in the beating line or picking-up – to refresh their minds on what should be done.

  • “There is no excuse for anything short of best practice when it comes to shotgun safety."
