Gun Cleaning Product Round up

Pete Moore considers some cleaning products that will keep your guns in top condition

I covered the physical act of cleaning firearms last year, so won’t repeat myself, but you will need the following: decent rods, jags, brushes, calibre-specific patches and potions and lotions: gun oil, bore cleaner, copper remover and grease etc, plus a silicone cloth, toothbrushes, toothpicks and cotton buds. There are many companies offering cleaning systems and product so here are just a few, that seem to work.

  • CLENZOIL

    CLENZOIL

Clenzoil offers complete cleaning systems and individual items such as a lamb’s wool applicator that allows you to apply cleaning or preservation fluids on metal and wood surfaces. Their protective sleeve is made of a tough. elasticated material impregnated with silicone that will stretch to fit most long guns, even scoped rifles. Hinge pin jelly though primarily aimed at break-barrel shotguns is good for any metal to metal contact on larger bearing surfaces. Field and range patch kit are pre-loaded with Clenzoil so just need pushing through the bore to clean and protect. In screw topped tins they will not dry out. The Cobra Bore Cleaner is a pull-through system using a thick, woven rope with integrated bronze bristles for an all-in-one wipe through and comes with a bottle of Clenzoil fluid, a great field expedient.

  • KG RIFLE & PISTOL PACK

    KG RIFLE & PISTOL PACK

KG Industries offer a massive range of product. Their Rifle & Pistol Pack includes KG1 Carbon Remover, KG3 Solvent and De-greaser, KG4 Gun Oil and KG12 Copper Solvent. They call KG1 a carbon remover, but it works as a general bore cleaner too; I used it on several rifles with good effect. My Browning Maral really does copper up badly and is red after 20-shots. So, a good test for the KG12. It’s then recommended to use the KG3 to remove any reside then clean with KG1 and finally a wipe through with the KG4. Pre-firing, a quick swab with KG3 will remove the oil then evaporate, leaving the rifle ready to shoot. Viking also distribute what I consider some of the best rods with rotary handles, jags and patches from Pro-Shot Products, well worth a look

  • REAL AVID GUN BOSS RIFLE CLEANING KIT

REAL AVID GUN BOSS RIFLE CLEANING KIT

Real Avid’s Gun Boss Rifle cleaning kit may just be the equipment you need in your pack! The seven-piece aluminium rod is controlled with a T handle to drive 22, 243, 270 and 30 cal phosphor bronze brushes and jags via its swivel tip through your bore and clean out any debris from a fall or just firing residue. Although not a full workshop tool, it will allow you to follow similar cleaning procedures to what gets done on your bench, without the need to carry a full-length rod around. Fifty 38x76mm (1.5” X 3”) patches are included to combine with the supplied nylon jags for the correct diameter without jamming and everything stores neatly in place inside a zipped Cordura case. Weighing only 192-grams and measuring 15 x 9 x 6cm it will fit into your rucksack without too much bother, or in your glove compartment. All you need to add to do a thorough clean-up job is your chosen barrel solvent. Real Avid also make a useful range of related tools too.

  • BREAKTHROUGH BATTLE ROPES™

    BREAKTHROUGH BATTLE ROPES™

Another pull-through system it uses a heavy braided rope that fully fills the bore with integral bronze bristles to remove debris as it’s pulled through. The Breakthrough Battle Ropes™ have a threaded brass link to allow for quick detachment of the nylon brush for increased cleaning effect. It’s also shows a calibre-specific brass weight to allow it to drop down the bore of any firearm easily, while a weighted brass end ensures that the system can be guided through the bore of the firearm with ease. Each one has a tag marking its calibre, so that it is easily identifiable. Designed for both rifle and shotgun use, with both 12 and 20-bore sizes and rifle sizes starting at .22 calibre, they are easy to use and an ideal field or range companion.

  • TETRA GUN CLEANING PRODUCTS

    TETRA GUN CLEANING PRODUCTS

Tetra Gun offers a comprehensive range here are a few: Action Blaster, Gun Grease, Bore Solvent, Triple Action and Copper Solvent. Action Blaster is a high pressure, 18oz aerosol that penetrates easily into all areas and will blast out dirt and debris and de-grease too. Gun Grease is a Fluoropolymer, which will reduce friction, prevent corrosion, reduce wear, prevents parts seizure and eases cleaning. Bore Solvent, removes carbon and powder fouling, it’s Ammonia-free. Triple Action is a Fluoropolymer, multi-roll cleaner, lubricant and protectant in a handy, pump-spray bottle, which makes application easier and economical. Copper Solvent is a heavy gel that removes copper, lead, powder and plastic residues. It shows a number of warnings, and I’d recommend rubber gloves and not to do it in an unventilated room. It’s non-etching and certainly works just read the instructions.
